Erg moves backwards when sprinting

Post by Hamiah » August 23rd, 2013, 8:46 am

My C2 is on hardwood floor. I have also had it on thin rubber mats on hardwood floor. Either way, when I do super high intensity sprints (rating at 40 or higher for 30 second sprints), it moves BACKWARDS (i.e., towards my back, or what would be the bow in a boat). So this is not the normal problem of an erg moving forward with the equivalent of "stern check." Can anyone help me with advice on (a) what is most likely causing the slipping or moving at those high rates, and more importantly (b) what mat or other solution woudl be best to stop the erg from moving during such sprints, or at all. Thanks.

Cause: the inertial forces that you generate when hauling yourself forwards fast.
Remedy: use slides; or generate smaller forces.

Define "Sprint" in terms of pace.

They will move more or less depending on technique but it's generally accepted that at like 1:30 pace or faster it's going to start moving around. It it's a major problem then it would need to be bolted down.Higher ratings would not help either I should imagine, I have done nothing over 34spm.

I have the same problem during sprints. since my erg is in a corner, I just cut 10" piece of non treated 4x4 and centered it behind the erg as a backstop.

Probably more of a technique problem than anything else. I can pull in the low to mid 1:20s at 30-32SR with no movement. When I try a low pull(1:11) or an all out 100m sprint(15.2) at over 40SR it moves a little, but not that much. Not saying my technique is perfect, but I first learned the erg from a very detailed coach and on the water rowing in an 8.
