He's A Meter Millionaire !!
Whoop, whoop and hooyah! Jim savored those last meters...and made the journey to ONE million for the rowing season stretch out there for the last couple of days....then ZOOOOOM...he's off and running into the next million! Congratulations, Jim, on achieving another ONE million meter rowing season! We wish you many, MANY more!
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Not really... just busy. I have captured the numbers from early in the day. The team often steps up and helps recognize each other's achievements. It's good stuff !Drivetofast wrote:MIA

Sometimes these bunny trails just present themselves without warning! One of the ways that a golf league that I'm in raises prize money is to have what they call a Cuss Jar. Each swear word (that would be a single expletive vs a bunch of them strung together) that you say on the course means a dollar to the Cuss Jar. At the end of the season, we have a tournament where the prize money is what we've generated throughout the season from our contributions. Sometimes, this thought process around Cuss Jars and "paying" when you say something spills over into our regular lives, like the time the toad jumped out of the flower pot I was working on ... I had to make a contribution then to my own Cuss Jar.
I started wondering who thought up this idea of a Cuss Jar, and before I knew it, I was down the bunny trail. There are some truly bleepworthy moments in life when a well-enunciated expletive is really the only thing that will express the emotion of the situation. Sometimes, it's even important to strafe the listener with a series of them. And we would ask that these bleepworthy moments be corralled?!! Ha! Who thought of that?
A quick review of one of my favorite resources, Wiki, finds that the Cuss Jar is first mentioned in an article about "How To Stop Swearing." This is a multi-step process.
1) Enlist the help of a friend. What? They have to stop swearing, too?
2) Identify your triggers and learn how to avoid them. Obviously, the author is NOT a golfer.
3) Use a cuss jar. It is said that the cuss jar is a tried and tested method which has helped MANY people kick their swearing habit. You can view the cuss jar in a couple of ways: either as a punishment or as a delayed reward. Sounds like a win win situation to me!
We have several league members who start the golf round by throwing in a $20 to the cuss jar, just to cover all situations. Some do their cussing sotto voce....I can't hear you, but I know what you're saying! Maybe you use word substitution....oh duck is not going to fool anyone. And some of us just say rats a lot.....except when toads jump out unexpectedly....
Tomorrow is our Cuss Jar Tourney, and things must be tough this year. For the tourney, the charge per word is $4 instead of $1...that's enough to make you slip up right there! Hahaha!

Four days to go!!! Row, row, row!!

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
I heard that cussing could be good for you, so in an effort to make it more than just my opinion (because there are just times when an F-bomb is just what the Dr. ordered, not to mention an uncontrollable response mechanism when you do hit your finger instead of the nail) I went online to find proof. I saw it in several sources, here's a quote from Oprah's website.
Cursing
The old thinking: Swearing is trashy. (Just picture The Real Housewives of Atlanta.)
The new wisdom: Using your favorite four-letter word at the right time can alleviate pain. A recent study published in NeuroReport found that participants who immersed their hands in icy water and were allowed to shout expletives experienced significantly less prickly, numbing pain than when they repeated neutral words. Researchers speculate that cursing activates the stress response, boosting the body's pain threshold to deal with crisis.

Thanks everyone for the attaboys on the million meter season. I enjoyed the cussing bunny trail and the pro cussing article Jodi posted.
Hasn't this been an exciting challenge? It looks like we could end up anywhere from third to sixth place. Way to row teammates, this is fun.

Great post, Jodi! If Oprah's on board, who am I to argue with the obvious value of a well-placed curse. Payment optional.Jodi wrote:I heard that cussing could be good for you ... I saw it in several sources, here's a quote from Oprah's website.
