patella tendonitis

Post by pjsals » October 5th, 2013, 5:28 am

Hi,
I have been using a concept 2 machine about 4 times a week for the last 5 years and over the last 3 months developed a pain in the soft area directly under my knee cap. It has got to a point where I have had to listen to my body and rest, but its so hard to not do any excersie! I have rested now for 3 weeks but I still feel it, and don't want to rush back.
I have been to the doctors who has suggested that I have an overuse condition called patella tendonitis. Has anyone any experience of this and the best ways to get a quick recovery!
Any feedback would be really appreciated.
Thanks

My gf has patellar tendinitis, though not from rowing. She does physical therapy to strengthen her muscles, wears a "band" around that area (not sure what it's actually called, but it's a black circular thing that goes right below the knee) and she also takes anti-inflammatory meds.

Are you sure you aren't compressing too much at the catch when erging? Or being too forceful when straightening out your legs at the finish? Erging shouldn't bother your knees too much

Look up Band TKE's, peterson step-ups. and poliquin step-ups. These can help with patella tendonitus, TKE's helped get rid of mine.

Thanks for the info. I will try to do the three exercises and see how it goes.
I think my form is (was) ok, but before I started to feel the pain I was pushing myself a bit harder than usual, which is what I suspect has done it. I also started to only do the concept 2 rowing when I should have combined this with some other exercises.

I would love to hear from anyone else who has made a successful recovery from this.

Thanks

Try hot and cold therapy once a day for 15 minutes doing 1 minute hot followed by 2 minutes ice, repeat this cycle 4 more times, this should help the tendon repair, also try a patella strap to reduce the stress on the tendon, this will also aid in the recovery.

Hope this helps
