Anyone out there experience pain in the balls of their feet? It is usually two bones called the sesamoids that are the culprit. It is supposed to be quite common, but a post of mine a couple days ago titled "Sesamoiditis" went by without a single reply.

I need to start running again soon, so if anyone has experienced pain or tenderness in the balls of their feet or do so from time to time I would love to hear how you combat it. I am nervous for that next run.

Thanks.

tditmar,
I, too, began to experience pain in the ball of my left foot last summer (before I ever rowed). I went through all of my running books and the best description that I was able to find was a condition called "stone bruises". Seisamoiditis did not fit the description of my issue since my pain was (is) located in the center of the ball of my foot -- and not under the first and second metatarsels. Stone bruises are said to be caused by hill-work in running. This makes sense since earlier in the summer we had moved to a hilly neighborhood which I promptly took to running every day.

I stopped running, or should I maybe say that the pain stopped me from running. I bought a C2D and took up rowing. Almost a year later and I still experience the pain in the ball of my foot -- from simply walking or being on my feet. So, that said, I will be making an appointment with a podiatrist at the next flare-up. It's time to get to the bottom of this since it doesn't seem to be going away on its own.

I wish that I could offer you a definitive solution for what ails you. When I know more, I'll be happy to share my new information with you. Please keep me in mind, as well, if you find any source of useful information or relief.

Be good to your peds... tlc

I have the same problem -- a very sore ball of the (left) foot -- but no solution yet. I'm the source of my own difficulty, as I learned from a podiatrist. I am very pigeon-toed, have high arches, and my feet pronate severely. (I actually used to trip over my own feet as a little kid.) As a result, the pressure of walking, pedaling, etc., falls disproportionately on the ball of the foot.

I lived with this without trouble until a year ago, when I bought new pedals (by Look) for my road bike. Thanks to my various weirdnesses, all the pressure of pedaling on the left side caused the ball of the foot to become inflamed. Rowing only seems to make matters worse. I now have inexpensive inserts in my biking shoes, and I have replaced the pedals (to Egg-beaters, which don't have the large platform of Looks). But I'm still not entirely out of the woods. I would love to get my foot back to normal.

So, anyone have experience with orthotics or other ways of addressing our common problem (e.g. shot of cortisone)? I'd be very grateful for any guidance you can provide.

Thanks,
Dennis
