Absolutely, but I won't be up to 200k/month for awhile. I posted 30.5 k today but that's the total of my rowing sessions in June, July and today. No way was I going to post 500 m here and there....hypothyroidism is just NOT for Hummingbirds. Anyway, I'm starting to feel better and managed to row 5 k this morning and still have energy to get on with the rest of the day. Fingers crossed, I should be able to do the same again tomorrow. Fingers double crossed, I'll be able to do it the day after, too...

Congratulations on your race, Smitty! Very impressive. Great pictures, too.

Good to see you back, Heather!! Glad you have a diagnosis with the thyroid, too. Hopefully you will continue to feel better. Meter out those meters as you get better -- no heroine-ic efforts!

Get Well Soon, H! I remember working my tail off trying to keep up with you when I first started...Speaking of hummingbirds, last week I saw a humming bird moth here in VT. Never seen one before, pretty cool though. Probably global warming? Just like all the ticks we have up here now that I don't remember picking off me as a kid. Well, I'm going to drive around in my pick-up and look for that moth now.

The Dog Days of Summer Challenge

Aug 1–Aug 28
The Dog Days of Summer are almost upon us! What better time for a challenge?
Complete the Dog Days of Summer challenge by finishing each of the following four distance goals in the timeframes indicated and log them in your online logbook:
Week 1, Aug. 1–7: 10,000 meters
Week 2, Aug. 8–14: 20,000 meters
Week 3, Aug. 15–21: 30,000 meters
Week 4, Aug. 22–28: 40,000 meters
Distances are cumulative (you don't have to complete 10,000 meters in one sitting, for instance), and all meters—rowing or skiing, indoors or out—count. Plus, this year, we've added an optional level for kids and adaptive athletes. We hope you'll join us!

Thanks...and I'll be working my tail off trying to get back to my old form, too. That was a special year for me, hopefully to be repeated sometime.

I had no idea what you were talking about until I looked it up on the internet: what an incredible creature! Man, nature never fails to astound me. I won't give up my little hummingbirds, but I'd really like to see one of those moths up close and alive. I'm flabbergasted. How did you ever know about it in the first place???

Thanks Lisa. Yes, hopefully I will continue to feel better. I think it's going to be an up and down thing: my session today left me worried about future efforts, but I perked up later in the day (and finally remembered to post them, though I think I missed the cutoff). It helps to remember that getting into the rhythm of rowing is an effort in itself: I never started with 20 or even 10K rows when I began or in any of the times I picked it up again after an absence.

Still and all, low thyroid = low metabolism = weight gain++ on even a low calorie intake (yes, that even means no ice cream  ). So trust me: what I can row, I will row. I just stopped myself from doing a second session once I got that energy back up... No shorts for me this summer!

Nice work!! You're going backwards though -- wasn't 40k+ supposed to be the last week?

I had a feeble but sufficient 10,424m.

12k for me. Sufficient for the challenge while trying to rebuild strength slowly. The challenge will do me good - I have to gradually recover and this will allow for that.

Well..maybe looks backward but I rowed what I could, logged it and it was a week's worth.I could have saved back the extra meters but that is counterproductive.
Now I need to be sure to stay with my fitness plan and maintain the weekly amounts as indicated.
Could be a challenge in itself..

Hello!
Ah..the perils and woes of hypothyroidism.I know them well.I was diagnosed with a non functioning thyroid about 3 years ago.I went for a routine physical..one i indulged in for my 60th birthday.I wanted to have just routine lab studies to be sure I was on target and had good base line records as I climb the ladder or fall off it   thru the aging process.
To my utter shock and dismay I heard.."your thyroid is not functioning".I gasped. No symptoms..no signs.
So now I am on daily Medication, 6 month evaluation and lab studies to watch my meds..and yearly thyroid ultrasounds.I do have a small nodule that had to be biopsied but luckily it was ok and is shrinking.
I work hard to keep my metabolism up there..didn't have the weight gain but when I need to lose a pesky 5 or so..it takes WAY longer.
I get tired but I am old..LOLOL..
So I row..not the millions I once did..and I have over 22 million lifetime meters under my belt.
I do lots of cardio!
I am also thinking of getting into CrossFit..am I nuts or what???

Hang in there with your thyroid issues,Ms Hummingbird! You can win the battle..
