Image Wildfires raging in Colorado again - and the high temperatures and high winds aren't helping a lot. They fill the slurry bombers at the nearby regional airport.

News cannot adequately convey how intense the wildfires are - whether they are here in Colorado, or in California. The smoke was so thick yesterday evening that it looked like we had fog - and it settled in the valley making for really poor air quality. Perhaps the weather will cooperate with the firefighters...but so much devastation, homes lost. Whoa. Another good reason to go to the moon ... no wildfires there! Of course, no trees either.

Obviously, the noisy bunch are all outside doing yard work ... or haven't signed back on, yet ... or are hanging out at the South Pole (I just finished reading "Where'd you go, Bernadette.") ... :)

Happy Father's Day to all our Dads! Great day wished for all !

The Denver Bike Century was held yesterday - with multiple route options that would suit riders of all abilities. This annual ride showcases a lot of neighborhoods in the Denver urban and suburban area, and benefits BikeDenver, a great cycling organization. BikeDenver offered Bike Jeffco an opportunity to have a booth at the lunch stop that would be frequented by all riders no matter what route they chose to ride yesterday. Bike Jeffco accepted this offer.

One of the things learned through participating in all kinds of organized rides throughout the years is that riders at all rest stops or aid stations always want to see a route map (even if they have one folded up in the back of their jersey), and see how far they have yet to ride. So I brought a route map. This turned out to be even more valuable than in previous years because this year the Denver Bike Century course route directions were all electronic. Riders were supposed to download an electronic guidebook. This eliminated a lot of map litter that can occur on a course when paper maps fly out of the back pockets of the riders' jerseys. Didn't work well for everyone, though. What I wished we had had was a larger map with a bunch of sticky notes where riders could post comments about the sections they had just ridden through....always room for improvements!

And, in my "there are no coincidences" category of events...what are the chances of two bike volunteers having the same Bike Friday model (well, his had a triple chain ring) in the same unusual color (Enno orange)??

Image How Saturday was spent....

Image

You've heard of Guns N Roses, well this was Bikes N Roses!

But the COOLEST thing....a guy and gal pulled up on their tandem. Instead of searching around for a place to try and gently lay the big bike down, they had a portable kickstand that they used. Upon seeing this, I immediately went up and said "where did you get that ?!" and the guy told me it was called a Click-Stand, billed as the world's only folding portable bike stand. http://www.click-stand.com/Home_Page.html Now that learning was worth the whole six hours that I was at the event....well, it was an added bonus to the good conversations had with multiple people on bikes!

But I digress...hahaha!

In yet another episode of Suburban Wild Kingdom, there is a nest of not so small Great Horned owlets in what remains of the field behind the house. Parent owls are currently teaching young owls to hunt - an activity that can be observed at twilight. Lots of wing flapping and strutting about going on (yes, still talking about owls  ). Oh dark thirty finds an owlet perched on the back fence....probably looking for breakfast...tried to get a photo, and when the flash bar went up, owlet's head did that 270 degree turn - pinpointing the location of the camera immediately....and flight happened.

Meanwhile, back at the team forum, Jeff M has checked in for the 2014 rowing season. Great to see another returning team member.
