Summmrrr is getting closer !! Time to plant the veggies and flowers!! And, in another episode of strange but true, sometimes the veggies appear practically at your front door and you don't even have to plant them (like the wandering zucchini).
Pulled into my driveway just after dark yesterday evening, and something seemed different by the mailbox....whoa...that looks like a...cantaloupe? Grabbed the flashlight (which can double as an anti-mugging device in case the cantaloupe turned out to be some other animal all rolled up and ready to launch), and went to check it out. Not a cantaloupe. Was a spaghetti squash...delivered right to the base of the mailbox. I live on a street that slopes at a mere 2 to 3 percent grade....enough to make you have to push a bit when biking back home, and enough to know to take the dogs on a walk counterclockwise so that going home is easier. There have been many times when I arrived home after a trip to the grocery, opened the back of the Explorer, and out tumbled a bag. But I've never had to chase vegetables down the street....Minnie would know what to do with this spaghetti squash thing...

Whoooosh!! That's the sound of the erg pulling through another month! Woohoo for June - the month of leaves and roses! And there's sure to be a meter millionaire or two in there as well.... :D Whoop, whoop! A whole new month!

For those in the Portland, OR region...the Rose Festival has been petaling along since 19 May...but tonight is the spectacular Starlight Parade with its over 100 illuminated entries. Just prior to the start of the Starlight Parade, there's the Starlight Run. I'll bet we have a few teammates who would be participating in this party if they were on the west coast! A personal favorite for Portlandia things to do is the Bridge Bike Ride - now called the Providence Bridge Pedal. This one takes place on the second Sunday in August. It's the one time a year where the bridges of Portland and the Willamette River are closed to motorized vehicles and open to all the pedestrians and people on bikes for a morning. Way cool way to experience the bridges! But I digress. :D

ImageToday's bunny trail of the mind was created by Jerri's posted rowing meters for yesterday. Back in the late 60s, Zager and Evans had a number one Billboard hit with the song "In the Year 2525." They never had another chart single, but their 2525 song has been covered by many other groups and in a lot of other languages. You never know where the bunny trail ends...

In the Year 2525....Zager and Evans

In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find

In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do, and say
Is in the pill you took today

In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing chew
Nobody's gonna look at you

In the year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides
Your legs got not nothing to do
Some machine is doing that for you

In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube

In the year 7510
If God's a-comin' he ought to make it by then
Maybe he'll look around himself and say
Guess it's time for the Judgement day

In the year 8510
God is gonna shake his mighty head
He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been
Or tear it down and start again

In the year 9595
I'm kinda wondering if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing

Now it's been 10,000 years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what he never knew
Now man's reign is through
But through the eternal night
The twinkling of starlight
So very far away
Maybe it's only yesterday

In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find

In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do or say
Is in the pill you took today ....(fading...)

Wow, hello 1969, and all the memories that just burst out of my medial temporal lobe! I remember trying to explain the words of that song to a precocious Swiss 10 year old who spoke five languages, but didn't "get" 2525! And, now I'll feel really, really old for at least the rest of the day. I might not even be able to row!

Its nickname is The Test of The Champion. It's the third and final leg of the Triple Crown Horse Racing series...and it takes place Saturday, 8 June as the Belmont Stakes held in NY. The race is sometimes referred to as Run for the Carnations because the winning horse is blanketed in white carnations. Recall that the winning horse in the Derby wore a blanket of red roses, and the Preakness winner gets a blanket of black-eyed Susans. And since we've been talking SONGS....each of these races has its own theme song, which is traditionally sung at the post parade. The post parade is the procession of the horses in front of the grandstands before the race. Who knew there was so much more than which horse won?!

Kentucky Derby --- My Old Kentucky Home
Preakness - Maryland, My Maryland
Belmont - New York, New York

So far, Orb (our moon named horse) and Oxbow have each won a race.....who will win the next one?!

Meanwhile, more team milestones are here to be celebrated. You know how there's sort of a turning point when you're heading for a goal (and sometimes that goal is just getting to the end of the work week), and you see that number and suddenly the endpoint seems closer? Well, Ron just crossed the 700K milestone mark...and suddenly that ONE million number seems REALLY a lot closer. Of course, I'm not the one who has to row that remaining 300 K

Correction On Blackeyed-susans They have never been used At the Preakness. Also after the Preakness a painter climbs a ladder and paints the owners silks colors on the weather vane. Chrysanthemums are painted to look like black-eyed susans

Whoa....almost went down that horse racing bunny trail...lots of busy today though...On this day in 1993, Julie Krone rides 13-to-1 shot Colonial Affair to victory in the Belmont Stakes to become the first female jockey ever to win a Triple Crown race.....Colonial Affair not a filly, though....and rats....can't resist a bunny trail about the Grand Lake moose, though...

Image

Have talked about the Village of Grand Lake before...and this week, the Moose Patrol has been shown on CNN and other news venues. Seems that a young local bull moose has taken a romantic fancy to a bronze bull moose statue that a Grand Lake family placed in its yard recently. Local residents are getting a good laugh.....moose frequent the area quite often, but generally not like this. Perhaps some of you have seen some of the news clips that have been shown. Maybe it's the altitude, maybe it's just a confused moose....the statue has yet to choose a suitor....

40 years ago Secretariat set the tack Record of 2:24 under a hand ride. I predict that this years winner will be around 2:30 For 1.5 mile race. There never will be another moving like a tremendous machine. I was there people were crying everywhere when he did it. Amazing
