Dominators Update

It’s time once again to update the list of The Dominators: those who have finished the season ranked #1 in at least five of the ten* events in their gender/weight/age group since the rankings began in 2000.

The top Dominator this season was TJ Oesterling (M-H, 60-69), who scored all ten #1s for the fourth time. For the fifth consecutive year, he bettered the world records for 5K, 6K, 30 minutes, 10K, Half-Marathon and Marathon; this season he also bettered his WR for 60 minutes, set last year. Since 2000, only three others have swept the board, none more than once.

Michael van Beuren turned 60 with a vengeance, grabbing nine #1s and missing out on the 10th by just 0:01.1 in the 500m. In the process, he set world records for 60 minutes and the Marathon. Right behind was Anne Bourlioux (F-H, 50-59), with nine #1s for the second year in a row. Seven people have finished a season with nine #1s.

For the fourth time, Roger Bangay (M-L, 70-79) placed first in six events. Twenty-six people have won six #1s in a season.

The 2013 list of Dominators finishes with Alys B K (F-H, 0-12), Sam Garber (M-L, 13-18), Joanne Marriott (F-H, 70-79), Anke Molkenthin (F-L, 50-59), Joan van Blom (F-L, 60-69) and Luanne Mills (F-H/L, 70-79), each of whom had the five #1s within a single age/weight group needed to become a Dominator. Sam Garber repeated from last year, and set a world record for 60 minutes. Before turning 50, Anke Molkenthin also claimed two #1s in the 40-49 group. Joan van Blom also made the best of turning 60 by setting world records for 5K, 30 minutes, 10K, 60 minutes and the Half Marathon.

Finally, Luanne Mills increased her lead as the best erger of all-time, becoming the only person to dominate eight times. During the 2013 season, in addition to her five #1s as a lightweight, she had three #1s as a heavyweight, for a life-time total of 74 first-place rankings.

Something is wrong with this list. It doesn't include any listings for Rich "Ranger" Cureton.

I'm still working on "The Deranger Update" ... .

In actuality, he was ranked #1 four times: 6K and 10K as a heavyweight in 2002; 2K in 2003 and 2004 as a lightweight.

In 2002, when he turned 50, he was #4 in the 1K, #9 in the 2K, #3 in the 5K, #2 for 30 minutes (by 10m), #2 for 60 minutes, and #2 in the Marathon. All-in-all, a pretty good year for him as a light heavweight (80kg?).

Perhaps he should have tried bulking up instead of struggling to get down to lightweight, but then he wouldn't have set the 2K WR in 2003.

2013 Dominators Update (revised)

[Concept2 USA has corrected some 2013 German race results and validated Anne Bourlioux's 60 minutes total; I have revised the post accordingly. Also, I had omitted Keith Coleman from the list of those with five #1s, for which I apologize. ]
