Using a Weightlifting Belt?

Post by neacail » April 28th, 2013, 10:08 pm

I'm wondering if using a weightlifting belt could be beneficial to establishing good form.

I slip into the bad of habit of bending at the waist instead of the hips. I'm thinking that a weightlifting belt would alleviate that problem and force me to bend at the hips. Hopefully my body would establish the physical memory of the movement.

The only negative I can foresee is that it could affect core strength and stability, but that might be negated by the yoga and core exercises that I already do.

Thoughts/opinions?

Thx. :)

You really should focus on pivoting from the hips as your arms go forward on recovery. Try keeping your shoulders down and relaxed and lean forward not crunch downward. Your head needs to be still, don't look down or up at the ceiling. Keep your eye on the top section of the monitor. What you're trying to do here is keep your chest up and open for breathing. If you're crunching down or rolling your shoulders forward and down and looking down, you're constricting your breathing. A weight belt will not correct this, only make it worse.
