All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 4.18.13

Post by Kona2 » April 19th, 2013, 3:36 pm

Whoa....it was like Christmas morning when I opened the team logbook today and was greeted by four returning faces.... :D Cartwheels!

Amazingly, more frozen innings of baseball were played at Coors Field...although the only reminder of heavy snowfall, and an incredible bit of teamwork to clear a playing field that was under ten inches of snow, was a giant snow pile in the bullpen. Fortunately the pitchers weren't as cold as the snow this time and the Rockies won. Of course, they are still smarting from being swept by the reigning world champion Giants. Image

Image Luther and Ruthie, K9 Comfort Dogs

Several team members have dogs - and some are service dogs. I had heard of therapy dogs and companion dogs, but hadn't heard of the K9 Parish Comfort Dogs until Newtown, and now in Boston. Many of us know that there's nothing quite like the simplicity of just giving your dog a hug when things aren't going so well. It's uncomplicated and quite reassuring. I hope Luther and Ruthie do lots of good work with their fellow K9s as they travel around. Each dog works for a couple of hours and then is given a break. Cool stuff.

I rowed my first ever marathon today, in honor of those in Boston and those whose lives have forever been changed. God bless those that are helping others in this time of need. I salute all of you. You are all heroes.

bg, you go to the Healthworks at Copley Square? That is also my daughter's gym. I will have to let her know. I remember before our last visit to see her, I was telling her I found this great gym right near her where there were a lot of rowing machines, and I could row while on vacation, and she said Dad, that's MY gym and it IS a great gym, but not for men. I played tourist instead.
... Definitely scary times. I was very glad to hear that you and no one with you were directly affected.

Kerry, congratulations on your first marathon. I was thinking of trying my first marathon too - part of a bid to make the 2MM mark. Unfortunately, it seems the end of this month got a little too full of other things for me to do. I may not make the 2MM mark this year, but it's not because there's any shortage of looney dust about.

Image A friend whose mother is in an assisted living facility for Alzheimer's patients reminds me that cats also are therapy animals. She related the story of Coal, a resident cat for the facility who has learned to open the door and go visiting other patients. Important traits for a therapy cat are a laid-back, steady, calm personality and a tolerance for the unusual. Lowered blood pressure and heart rates are observed when people interact with cats...unless you have a cat who is outside the accepted boundaries for therapy work. I tend to think that Jesse, the bread stealing, pie eating carbo kitty is related more to Cato, of Pink Panther fame. Cato, who was Inspector Clouseau's manservant, was trained to attack Clouseau regularly to keep his martial arts skills at the ready....

More half moons appeared in the skies ... this time in Mexico, San Francisco, Florida and northern Virginia! The Global Marathon Challenge starts on May 1st....and goes through the next couple of weeks. There is still time to get your marathon or half marathon in if that is your goal.

For Boston: several teammates may be rowing half or full marathons today on the one week anniversary of Boston. Our local news station suggested incorporating the numbers 262 in your day somewhere today - maybe I'll add a 262 in my rowing total somewhere today.

Half moon fever is popping up throughout our rowing universe! Half moons from Vermont, Massachusetts, Czech Republic, Israel, and North Carolina today! Well done, everyone!

Sounds good to me. Magical faerie dust of a lunar persuasion, especially with regard to over-the-top efforts by members of the LUNA-TICS team.
