went onto to boston today to get my bag that you bring to athletes village in hopkinton..the beginning of the race... and gets bussed to the end of the race.....i took public transportation and was surprised that my back pack was never checked...only saw national guardsmen in back bay....that's very close to were the two bombs went off...helicoptors overhead...once again very surreal....spooky almost....but folks talking to each other....vowing to run next year....so hard reading hearing about the people who died and are injured...i feel so lucky that i will be able to run again....

As the Boston Marathon story unfolds, I am reminded of several of our teammates who have lost limbs through acts of terrorism and war times. Maybe you thought of them, too. Michelle, Sarah of Canada and Israel, Rivka. We have been largely protected here in the US from such acts for many years. Our children will know a different reality. One of the quotes that I particularly liked said simply: Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Martin Luther King. There is need for deep strength and some shining light. We have some examples of those things on this team. Keep the faith, Lunies! Row strong - there are healing powers in those meters! I'm sure of it. In the meantime, keep lighting up those events with attendance and participation...it's your world.

While some teammates were rowing some marathons in support of bg and her goal, there were others who were rowing 2,600 m for the Newton folks, and others who rowed our special 8's. Who said rowing was just about the meters....it's often how we make our statements and work through things.

MORE SPRINGTIME !!

The Colorado Rockies baseball team played a memorable doubleheader yesterday following a two hour delay for SNOW removal from the field. Temperatures in the first game hovered around 41 F, which is pretty darn chilly by baseball standards. There were heaters in the dugouts, but it was taking an extra ten pitches or so for the pitchers to warm up. Of course, there were a couple of pitchers on both teams that weren't going to warm up no matter what. One of my baseball friends texted me at the beginning of the game to ask if they were throwing baseballs or snowballs. Probably some of each! A come from behind win in the first game sent the Rockies happily into their clubhouse for the 30 minute break between the two games. Meanwhile, the temperatures continued to drop and frozen mist (I think some of us would call this flurries) started to blow into the field with about a 10 to 12 mph wind. Temperature at the start of the game was 31 degrees (with a wind chill that put it into the 20s). And wouldn't you know it, what looked like a sure win for the Mets suddenly was a tie ball game...and on the coldest night for a major league game probably ANYWHERE in the US for this baseball season, the game went into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th inning, a walk off single by a Rockies player ended the tie and the frozen innings ended. PS - Under The Baseball Moon is a book for teens written by J. Ritter. Haven't read it. Just liked the title. It was a snowshoe bunny trail.

Am I picking at nits here? I did 13,348 meters on the 15th and 14,390 meters on the 16th. Not a big deal, but I don't want to be credited with meters I didn't actually do. Coincidentally the totals for the two days almost work out to the same amount. LOL

Hahaha! I could just say yes, but I would rather explain how the meter stuff sort of happens because lots of people wonder from time to time where their meters are, or how did I get more than they thought they put in on one day and less on another. It's a fair question!

If you uploaded the meters all in one bit (i.e., 13,348 m on one day all at once, and 14,390 m on one day all at once), then they should have been visible to me just like that. If you uploaded a couple of sets of meters and they totalled 13,348 and 14,390 m respectively, I might have captured numbers that were incomplete totals for the day or which blended into the same totals over the two days.

Here's how the very manual number capture works: at some point in the morning (and this time varies depending upon what is going on in my world by several hours often), I log onto the team site. I get a print out of exactly what shows for the total team meters and then for each individual's meters. I take the individual meters and put them into an archaic (but good!) spreadsheet. If the total I get at the bottom of that spreadsheet matches the total for the affiliation at the time the snapshot of numbers was taken, then I breathe a sigh of relief. If it doesn't, I usually try to balance them out by slowly reviewing my work. Slowly. There is incentive for me to get it right the first time. Since the two numbers you provided exactly match the total of 27,738 for the two days, my guess is that you uploaded your meters in segments....and I just happened to catch the daily number total in between segments.

At one point, I did have a program that went out and got the numbers at exactly the same time every day from the website. It listed all the totals, and was wonderful. Except I couldn't see the patterns because it didn't put them into a spreadsheet...and often, the patterns are where the stories come from.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation. Since the totals were so close I figured it must be something like that. Just as an aside, they were inputted as two separate entries, not several different amounts, Not a big deal in the least, just curiosity on my part. Thanks again for the heads-up.

Be on the look out for bikes AND milestones!!

This is one of a series of five safe cycling posters from a young fellow named Thomas Yang in Singapore. He designed this series in support of the Bike Safety Campaign for Singapore, and has asked that if we like his work, that we share it around the world. Minnie sent me a copy of another poster that Yang produced for the series, thinking that I might want to add it to my collection of bicycling graphics. I contacted the artist and he shared all five posters with me to help spread the word. Bike safety is a global issue - we have many cyclists on the team, and almost everyone is a driver if they are old enough. Cool stuff.

Great stuff K2 Like the poster and the message While cycling and running I've had several close calls. Most of the time it is people just not paying attention. A few times it has been malicious people playing "chicken"
