New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
So you actually did it! And great job at that! - CANCEL THAT - Fantastic job! And - as I predicted - it seems that hell did freeze over - the cold even reached up here. The Owens Valley had been having a premature summer with lots of temperatures in the mid-70's and even up to 85 and 87 this last last weekend. A little drop to 74 yesterday and way down to 53 today with lots of new snow in the mountains. Some of that snow even got down to the valley floor here in Big Pine. Now if some one could only get Jonathon to do one, it might freeze over permanently. Hey - that would take care of global warming.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Mike,
First of all, the 2:45 was a great row. I'm not sure if I have that in me at my best. I, perhaps stupidly, am seriously thinking about doing a marathon only 10+ weeks after THR. It might kill me. I will have to force myself to slow down.
I've commented on TJ's rowing several times. What a talent!!! I just wish he would come out of hiding. He deserves to be at the head of the lists of the best: C2, nonathlon, etc.
Never tried slides. I'll stick with pure vanilla.
Again, congrats, Jim G

I wish that it applied to the dynamic as well. If I can make it to Long Beach or San Diego in Jan/Feb 2015, I would have another shot at the 2k, maybe even both weights. All the other marks would be ripe for the picking - except that they would not count on my machine.mikvan52 wrote:Yes. I'll never touch your real marathon marks...
It's perfectly all right. Records are made to be broken, and I'm glad that it was by someone that I know plays by the rules (unlike some of the suspicious 'records' in the 50+ lwt division that are out of the realm of possibility for honest ergers).
Congratulations again. I will use your WR status to promote the NE2KC next time you come here.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
For the most part that is true of recent top times, although computer-savy people have found ways to get around the verification process and posted verified impossible times. Usually these are later removed and usually the person who did it will come clean and indicate that they did it only to show that it was possible.Cyclingman1 wrote:Aren't the top times of the verified nature?
On the other hand, there are 'historical record' times still listed as records that are equally impossible yet remain on the books. Look at the world records for 50-59 lwt men at all distances from 5,000m and the half-marathon. Compare them to times by known world-class men in the same age group that have been verified in the past 10 years. Besides being bogus (I refuse to be wishy-washy on this issue), these marks make it impossible for the men who should rightfully be acknowledged as record holders to claim their due, and keep future men in this category from having a legitimate, achievable mark to shoot for.

Rick,
I have to agree. The historical records from 2002-3 seem to be bogus. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of the claimant. I do know that his times are well below the 60-69, HWt record holder in the same events, which does not seem plausible.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
The V means only the the distance and time are verified. Even the date and time of day depend on how the monitor is set at the time the piece was done. It cannot tell who or how many rowers did the piece. Apparently it can now show whether or not a piece was done on a dynamic. There are other weak points, like the lack of weight, age, and gender checks and those last two apply to the public event races as well. I have never seen any sort of check on age at an ergatta. The gender bit is generally obvious enough at a public event and with no money in the game, it is unlikely that steroid use would get involved. Well, maybe it could. Sometimes national OTW team members enter the IR competitions and I have heard some interesting tales of some of the eastern european teams in the early days of women's Olympic rowing.Cyclingman1 wrote:Aren't the top times of the verified nature?
It got pretty wild a few years ago when a team did an open category sub WR 2k and posted it as a verified piece done by an individual. It was meant as a joke just to prove that it could be done, but it had a lot of weird repercussions, including the dissolution of one of the most popular British indoor rowing groups. Fascinating reading, but I don't know an easy way to find it in the archives of the UK forum.

Thanks hjs! Just posted the below on the UK blog site too.
2 Cups of Coffee & 4 Chocolate Chip Cookies Plus 1 Gatorade & 2 Pop Tarts was the breakfast of choice this morning. Today, the plan was to do hard row. The location in the garage with the door wide open. The temperature was ideal, 12 Celsius with a slight breeze . The 60´ time trial was chosen . The real American record set by Dennis Hastings of 16278m in 2004 became the target. Drag factor is set at 118. A 2k warm up and I'm on my way. First 12´ split 1:50.1r30, feeling good. Second split 1:49.9r31, projected finish 16300 to 16377, feeling strong and keeping the rate up. Third split 1:50.2r30, projected finish 16300 to 16350, got to remember this is an hour row and need to pace myself. Fourth split 1:50.4r30, the goal is insight, just maintain, 16305 to 16350 is the projected finishing distance. Last split 1:47.8r32, with 8 minutes to go I still feel good, lets start pushing the pace. The goal has been sealed and now how far beyond can we go? 3 minutes to go the pace is now 1:46r32 with 16393 projected. Not good enough. 1 minute to go. Come on now. Give it ALL. 1:44r34,35,36+ 16400 comes into view. 20 seconds. Hell No, faster. 16405! WTF! Never in my dreams. What a journey. A personal best.
