I need some advice following a road traffic accident.I was in a
motorcycle crash and i was in hospital three months and had seven
operations to repair my left leg which suffered a fractured ankle and
femur its now over a year on iam still partly on crutches.
I have recently purchased a rowing machine on the advice of my
specialist and i wonder if you could advise me on a achievable routine
to help me lose some weight and get some strength back in my legs. My
specialist advised me that i need to lose 2 stone and some hard work on
my legs i will walk without crutches. If you can offer any advice i would
be most grateful.

many thanks Mr D J Mcnevin

email - djdavemc3@hotmail.com
icq - 55513606

My advice is start slow but persist. Pay attention to whatever limitatiions you have, but work to push them back.

In my case, I had access to a treadmill, so a lot of my rehabilitation was though walking. Are you ready for that? It seems that part of your rehab will simply be developing the capacity to walk unaided.

Without specific knowledge of your limitations (things like range of motion), it would be very hard for anyone here to give you specific advice. I suggest that you sit down and see what you are able to do on the erg; then, as you are able, increase it in some fashion, whether time or pace. You already know that this is a slow process, but from one tortoise to another, best of luck. Don't quit.

Porkchop

[
Hi Carol

Yes there was quite a lot of muscle wastage because my cast was on
for over 4 months, and for three months i was in a hospital bed
before the nhs physio's got me out of bed and onto a special frame.
once released from hospital i attended out patients physio and they
gave me a leaflet of excercises to do at home. i have not long begun using
my new rower and i feel iam getting the strength back in them.
i used to do a lot of walking and running before this accident and i hope
i can return to some high level of fitness given time. Well i hope your leg
gets better soon carol take care.
quote=CAROLE MAC,Feb 4 2005, 03:35 PM]
Dave I also have a broken leg and the cast is hopefully coming off on Monday .. have you been given any exercises to do by a physio if so what??? was there a lot of muscle wastage when the cast came off ???

I have managed to train quite a bit and even racded one legged with foot ona cushion .. http://mattn.uuhost.uk.uu.net/cminj2.jpg hee hee

Anyone else any ideas re exercises for strengthening legs ???
[/quote]
(The top arm bone is the most painful to break in your body.. Apparently...)

The muscles wasted quite dramatically on my left arm and a also snapped a tendon or two. Thankfully there are plenty to go around so no real loss of power.

Good luck on your recovery, it will take time, training and patience (took about a year for mine to recover completely).
carole,
will you be getting physio when your leg is released? my 15 year old daughter has just started her physio last wednesday after her knee op in early sept '04. the various branches of the nhs haven't been very well co-ordinated in this instance. this wednesday she sees her consultant again to see if she needs to have a cartilage transplant, which is 8 weeks post op. non-weight bearing . fortunately she has regained good flexibility and strength just by getting on with stuff, even though she can't do any PE at school as it's all running, netball and stuff like that (rowing's ok though!).
jane

Jane I hope I will be given some physio... I am also hoping to go to the Police convalescent home ..well I have paid in since 1979 so it's time I went lol... it's at Harrogate and apparently like a 4* hotel will a pool ,gym and physio's and doctors etc . The only stipulation I believe is for me to have treatment in the morning and then the day is my own . Harrogate is a lovely town too in the Yorkshire dales.
My own Dr just has to sign some forms to say it will be beneficial... Carole with the forms in her likkle paws haa haaa....

Oh and there must be someone with some ideas for Dave and I for recup etc .. ???

Carole, We have friends who live in Harrowgate-lovely place, although maybe a tad cold right now. You do have the whirlpool bath available to warm up after a cream tea or shopping....

Then its off to Oz for you. You are getting around even with a handicap.

RE: physio after foot surgery. I have the tendons in both ankles rebuilt several years ago. Same thing as you-I got really out of shape because I couldn't walk very far for a long time. In your case you have the 'advantage' of working on your upper body strength with the crutches so you can take it easy on the feet & ankles when you erg and still get a workout.

I always always always use my custom arch supports in a good pair of shoes when I am erging. If you have any be sure to use them. Even if it means modifying a pair of shoes just for erging.

My left foot tendon will act up if I push it too far, like on a bicycle, but I can erg for 2 hours now at a slow pace without any twinges.

There was a time when my doctor said I would never be able to walk very far again, but he was way wrong. BTW, I switched doctors when he said that.

Keep up the good effort. It sounds like you are on top of things.

grams

Thanks Grams for the reply .. I am on top of it although went a bit stir crazy this week Mr Mac is on evenings and he does 6 on the bounce there is only so much tv,bookreading and listening to music you can do .. think I may bake tonight lol.
Mind you I am a lot more mobile thean I was ... I have two german shepherds and I have so missed walking them . I think they understand though cos they have been very loving and the dog Ted is usually standoffish when it comes to cuddles .

Harrogate isnt that far from me so the climate is very similar. Cream teas mmm... Betty's .... http://www.bettysandtaylors.co.uk/ will have to up the erging if I go there lol ...

carole,
i have just had a thought that a girl i used to look after at boarding school had some physio (to build up muscle to compensate for damaged tendons) which included resistance work with a dynaband. do you think this might be of any use?
jane

sorry! it's a wide elastic strip (about 5 or 6 inches wide) which can be tied at the ends to form a loop, or used with the ends loose. actually, have a look here....

http://www.dynaband.co.uk/

it might be useful. i got a workout dvd with the band included at whsmiths for under £12.

hope it helps. it doesn't clutter up the house like other certain bits of gym equipment that i could mention!

jane
