Image Image Mud Hens and Image Blue Hens...

For a moment or two, got the hens mixed up. Springtime means mud for the Vermonters, and spring training baseball for a lot of other people. It's always good to cheer on your local teams - and this seems especially true when it's your local minor league baseball team. Totally different experience to go watch a minor league game - lots of baseball drama as major league players who might be rehabbing from an injury come to town, and a lot of other aspiring players trying to get to The Show, or the big leagues. Baseball has been around a really long time in the US, with a number of cities claiming teams that go back to the 1880s.

Toledo has a minor league team called the Mud Hens, and they're a farm team for the Detroit Tigers. Toledo got its present day minor league team in 1965 (there have been several minor league teams named the Mud Hens in Toledo) when the team was called Toledo Glass Socks in honor of Toledo's glass industry. At one time in the late 1890s, the team played at Bay View Park - an area surrounded by marshes inhabited by mud hens (a marsh bird with short wings and long legs). The abundance of mud hens near the baseball park delivered the nickname to the team - although there have been efforts to change the name, it's still the one. Its mascots are Muddy and Muddonna  , and they have a team of young dancers who are called the Chicklets.

Turn back your tv time dial to the hit series M.A.S.H. The character Klinger (who was always trying to get a section 8 dismissal) was supposed to be from Toledo - and often wore Mud Hens gear.

Image Bears a striking resemblance to a mud hen's description of short wings and long legs.....

The Blue Hens are the teams of the University of Delaware, and this is also the state bird of Delaware. Some view the University of Delaware as a Cinderella team in the current NCAA Women's Basketball tournament. The team has an impressive 30-3 record and is playing North Carolina this afternoon for a chance to go to the Sweet 16. The most well known Blue Hens player is Elena Delle Donne - and she is predicted to go second in the upcoming draft...right after Britney Griner of Baylor. Now you know.

Meanwhile, back at the rowing machine, the 5K Honor Board threatens to dip below the 900 mark, and the 10K and 2500 m board members are digging in their erg riding heels. And, btw, Mudness Winners don't have to be on the honor boards, they just have to be chosen from the population of the rowing universe that has rowed either 5K or 10K on the selected day. Wouldn't that be better incentive if people had to be on the Honor Boards to win!? Wowzer...that would improve the chances of winning! If you're still on the Boards, keep going going going! If you've fallen off the edge, keep rowing rowing rowing!!

Image Getting more rowers and we're closing the gap! Whoop, whoop!

Hahaha! Someone besides me has been scrolling through the team totals today. I couldn't resist having that numeric alignment. Thanks for noticing.

Image Row 5 or 10 K...two winners will be chosen from entries on this Mudness Day!

Image And Minnie, who is queen of the 27 with her just27 tag -- today could totally be YOUR day.

Image In 6th place overall....hang in there! Not sure where we'll end up! All we know is that we are rowing, rowing, rowing!

Meanwhile, some interesting things happening! Laurie has thrown down back to back half marathonsImageImage (I remember when Karyn did that, too), and Ron has mooned us so many times this season that he's hit new milestones (although I think it is possible that he and Minnie might be pretty close in terms of team records for number of HMs in a single rowing season). The number 239 is in my mind (however right or wrong it may be). Great stuff happens when you put those outrageous goals out there...and start making them happen. Hooboy! Well done, everyone.

Image And looks like congratulations on a hole in one are in order for Greg C of Indiana! Odds of making a hole in one are about one in 12,500 ! I'm pretty sure that the new team profile picture for Greg is a hole in one photo!

Season meters as of 329/365 = 133,357,821 m

Total meters on the day = 509,392 m

Come on, 27! I live in glorious anticipation and expectation; though, I would be almost as delighted to see a fellow Lunatic score today's swag.

WOW! 200 half marathons this season alone? (Wait a minute, that means you have erged at least 4,219,400 meters in one season. That is amazing!) On top of it all, you did this with back and rib injuries. You should be extremely proud of yourself. I am!

Image Don't lose your muchness !!

The Mad Hatter: [to Alice] You used to be much more..."muchier." You've lost your muchness.

The Mad Hatter: Have I gone mad?
Alice: I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.

Mudville, Day 28 of 31 dawns. The 5K board has 851 occupants, the 10K board has 344 residents, and the 2500 m has 19. And oh happy day, surprisingly I am still on the board. I thought for sure that I had fallen off a day or so ago. Well, that puts a different spin on the day already. :D To the erg!

Image And by some fate of meters, we are in fifth place overall today. Marvelously well rowed, everyone!

Season meters as of 330/365 = 133,779,899 m

Total meters on the day = 422,078 m

Oars in space (participation) = 26 percent

Image And out in space, the most unusual things keep happening with our teammates. Miss Kiba popped onto the radar charts today! The A to Z wunderkinds have added more meters (next year they will probably have million meter rowing seasons!) and have passed the 750 K meter milestone. We have four teammates on the final approach to million meter seasons: Bobbie, Laurie, Andrew and Jay R. Tom M may join them this year, too. David T is fast approaching the 2 million meter milestone, and Ronnie and Danno will surely make it to FOUR million meters. Jay and Ron seem likely to hit the 7 million meter mark for the year. Simply amazing what this team believes is possible!

Image Mudness Madness...and still no third winner from the team!?

The countdown to the end of Mudness Madness has begun! Two more days after this - one more if you live in the southern hemisphere. Let's go for a brilliant finish!!

Image Hooboy....we could be thinking of fourth place today!!

Image Things are looking up with this full moon! Roger looks like maybe he caught full moon fever...should start sweeping through the team in the next few weeks! And could Kerry's big week finally have caught up with her? The wunderkinds are working hard to out row each other...and at this rate, might be offered college rowing scholarships by the time they are in 8th grade. Minnie didn't win on the 27th...but then, no Luna-Tics won on the 27th. We did, however, have more Lunies rowing than we did the previous day...and that's a GREAT thing to have happen. :D
