I'm very new to erging and have had my model d for 6 weeks now. Came across interesting discussion about rowperfect vs concept 2. That debate aside, one person talked quite enthusiastically about using sliders and gave his reasons why which sounded pretty good. It got me thinking and now wonder if I shouldn't incorporate that. However, it seems like most don't use them making me think I should forgo as well. What's your opinion?

Re: Sliders Question -New to Erging
For general training at relatively low rates and Power (say max 28 and 200W) the grounded erg is fine. As your workload and demands increase, a move onto slides may be useful: the "fixed" erg can move around on a slippery floor, whereas slides won't; less power loss due to body mass inertia at high ratings, which consequently are easier. Some say there's less risk of back problems, but I evidently don't pull hard enough for that risk to appear; if anything getting fitter helps cure back problems and in any case posture is perhaps the major factor, as in any movement under load.
With the slides you'll need a bit more space and if you've never sculled you may get some surprises techniquewise. As far as I know all erg racing is done on fixed ergs, but switching from one to the other is not a problem if you have reasonable technique.

Re: Sliders Question -New to Erging
jamesg makes good points..
I use slides a lot and feel that, since I have two set already, I don't need to move to the C2 dynamic or the rowperfect... both of which, BTW, I also love...
Slides require a level surface. Check dimensions needed on the C2 site or just call a tech. on the 800 number.
I feel that slides improve my efficiency and are a necessity for my success on the water. You will hear many people advise that the static (regular) erg is bad for OTW form... You can get around that.... but slides make it easier...
Then there's a simple prejudice I have... slides FEEL better and are therefore more fun to row... I feel like I'm pushing with my legs rather than taking the catch with my shoulder girdle. Everything is smoother...
As for records... The 2k must be done on the static... Slides are allowed for other distances.
Next to no indoor regattas provide slides for competition. A few did a few years back... There were even 2x competitions.... It ended up being under subscribed and too much of abn expense and hassle.
I was even at a CRASH-b one year where there were 2x slides races!
