Image Another episode.....

Image Many of us have seen the 1998 film "The Mask of Zorro", and the sequel "The Legend of Zorro" (2005). In fact, I'm pretty sure that the screen shot that forms the Z graphic is taken from the first Zorro film. Both these films featured Antonio Banderas in the title role. Long before the 1998 reprisal of Zorro, though, was the tv series Zorro (1957-59)...and the featured actor was a fellow named Guy Williams. Guy went on to play in another tv series "Lost In Space" (1965-68), which is perhaps closer to our lunar theme. :D

Some say that Zorro was one of the first dual-identity crime fighters - a masked man who appeared long before Batman, the Lone Ranger or Superman and what is now a score of other action figures. Zorro was the creation of a popular writer named Johnston McCulley, a fellow who was a police reporter and Army Public Affairs Officer. He wrote a ton of stories before he moved to novels, and the some of the first of these appeared in pulp magazines that were popular in that day. The Curse of Capistrano was published in a series of five weekly installments in All Story Weekly in August 1919, and Zorro, the action hero of Spanish California was launched. The Mark of Zorro, 1920 silent film starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr, is said to have set both the actor and the Zorro character on paths to greatness. Swashbuckler films ! Action heroes! Those who fight for justice! (Not excepting the fact that masked identity roles are throughout Shakespeare and classics like The Scarlet Pimpernel... but the dual identity roles there were generally for a different purpose...I know, nerdville...)

I wonder how difficult it will be to find the original story that McCulley wrote? Or to watch the 1920 film? Oh, these bunny trails just keep expanding....

Zorro Theme Song for TV Series....

Out of the night,
When the full moon is bright,
Comes the horseman known as Zorro.
This bold renegade
Carves a "Z" with his blade,
A "Z" that stands for Zorro.

Zorro, Zorro, the fox so cunning and free,
Zorro, Zorro, who makes the sign of the Z.

He is polite,
But the wicked take flight
When they catch the sight of Zorro.
He's friend of the weak,
And the poor and the meek,
This very unique señor Zorro.

Zorro, Zorro, the fox so cunning and free,
Zorro, Zorro, who makes the sign of the Z.

Zorro, Zorro, Zorro, Zorro, Zorro.

Zorro - spanish name for fox...

So, Zander, when you get the "Z" graphic....it's a pretty cool thing. :D

An update. Our public library has the story, and Netflix has the silent film...that was not too tough.

Congrats to all the recent meter millionaires! Way to row! I just changed my profile back to the Luna-tics, and my name is still showing on the military challenge roster, FWIW. I noticed that my name does not appear on last year's challenge results. Maybe the good folks at C2 can manually add in our missing names. It seems such a shame that you guys who did so many meters disappeared just like that when you switched back. This illness is still keeping me down, but I do hope to be back on the rower soon. Maybe in time for the WEC.

About time zones for the March Madness challenge: I think C2 must be honoring whatever time zone you are in. I just happened to be looking at the March Madness Progress Board, and noticed that some people in Australia and New Zealand had already posted 11 days, when for me it was only March 10.

I emailed C2 and the answer I got was that is indeed the case. It logs on your day/time. I apologize for not sharing....I got it at work and got distracted by other things.

My grandfather died today (he had been in hospice, so it was somewhat expected) so I am happy I made it an extra long day late last night for an after-midnight 10k so I could have a quasi-off-day today.
