Newbie's & more - Want to do a weekly thread? Feb 25

Post by Little Miss Muffet » February 25th, 2013, 10:56 am

Hi everyone.
I'm new to the C2- have a bunch of weight to lose and have spotted some posts recently from other newbie's in the same boat :D

I know I like to have a place I can check daily with others to keep me focused and on the right track so I don't slack off.

I figured I would start a thread and see what happens. I hope others will chime in daily too.

Happy Monday Everyone!

Good Idea! I just started rowing last week and am still getting my old, tired muscles used to the new movement. I'm sure some of my muscles have not been worked like this for a long time. My wife and I are hoping to improve our general level of fitness with our new rower. We are starting off slow so we don't hurt ourselves.

I bought a new Model E because my wife, who is very overweight, has a hard time getting on and off the model D which sits so low to the ground. We are both age 70, and we need motivation to keep going. I don't want this rowing machine to reach the same fate as all the other exercise machines we have had over the years. We don't need another "clothes rack"!!

Hi Joe-
My husband and I are following the same path as you and your wife. Just going slow, avoiding injuries and trying to make it part of our lifestyle. We sold the last "clothes rack" (an elliptical) when we realized that neither of really like to run. :)

We got our Model E about a week ago, we went with that model because of the height and realizing that even though we are both young (in our mid-40's) that our knees weren't going to get any younger. I'm glad I did - its seems comfortable to me, especially since I need to drop at least 50lbs.

I am working up to 5000m a day. I want to participate in the March Madness challenge.

Have you looked at Sparkpeople.com? There's a nutrition, food tracking section there, as well as forums.

:)

Thanks for reply.

5000 meters a day, after only one week?? Is that your idea of starting easy?? I am still less than 1000 meters a day, but we've only had the rower for 3 days.

Will have to checkout that Sparkpeople site.

Good luck on your March Madness.

The number of meters does not have all that much significance. It depends on how hard you go at it. 1000m at a racing pace is far harder on the body than a 5000m at an easy paddle. It is the combination of distance and intensity that counts.

I am going at what most people would call a pretty easy paddle. Since I am still new, I am focusing more on form, getting into a rhythm and building up enough stamina do just do 'something' for 30 minutes. I am not pulling much in terms of watts. I notice myself getting short bursts (one or two) heavy pulls.

Just trying to get good habits in right now.

I am using the Garmin heart rate belt and PM4 monitor that came with my new Model E, but each time I have to go into the menu and select it. The option to remember the belt doesn't seem to work. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, is there any way to switch users on the PM4 without having to remove the log card each time?

I think you have to add the belt to the log card memory. I am using the ergdat app on iPhone which now remembers the Garmin belt also.

The PM4 will store your ANT/ANT+ serial number on the LogCard follow the menu options.
You can't switch users without pulling the card, that's a change to the firmware that C2 had to make to make room for new features.

Hi Peoples. I received my C2 D last Thursday, and I am still trying to get used to it, but I think I like it. I'm 63 yrs old (in two weeks) and I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle as a school bus driver. It occurs to me that if I want to age well I better get moving, so I bought the rower. Today I did two rows, 1000 m each, first one took 5:17 and the second was done in 5:00:4. Pretty slow for some, but each row had me gasping for air like a fish out of water by the end. In some perverse way, it is fun. I think I'll try for one more before bed tonight. Anyway, onward and upward.

You should start off slow and work up to the the longer sessions. I am age 70, and after 3 weeks rowing have somehow strained my left knee and had to lay off rowing for a few days. Also, as a newbie and older person, don't feel pressured to try to match the rowing statistics you see from others on this forum. You don't want to hurt yourself or have a heart attack!! Just try to row on a regular schedule and work a little harder or longer each session. Listen to your body - it will tell you when you are overdoing it.

Good luck.

Good advice Joe. I *think* I'm taking it easy. I started with just 500m rows for a couple of days. Yesterday I did 3000m, 1000 m at a time, one in the am, one midday, and one pm. Today I did a 2000m am row before work, then just now I did a 3000m row. so far so good. I pretty sure I need to work on technique as my watt output averages about 95, but really is all over the place. And I can't quite figure out how to slow down my stroke pace, which is between 26-29, and still get good watt numbers. But it will come, i hope.

Any newbies interested in joining a new Team and Affiliation? I have started the "Japan & Friends Indoor Rowers" (I live in Japan) Affiliation and Team to help keep my interest up. Presently there are just two of us joined up to both, but this puts us on the board. We're open to any and all to join of course, no meter total too small! Cheers, Wayne.
