Woohoo, hooyah and whoop, whoop! In between pounding the pavement (an increasing amount of time as the Boston Marathon gets closer) and pounding the erg at the gym, bg has managed to pull an amazing amount of meters! Congratulations, Barbara, on achieving a FIVE million meter rowing season! Way to row!!

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 2.4.13

Post by Kona2 » February 5th, 2013, 3:16 pm

MOVE OVER, Army-Navy football game. There's a new "kid" in town, a new challenge to embody the spirit of the interservice rivalry, and it's the Concept2 Military Challenge. And this definitely is not meant to disrespect ANY and ALL of the service branches that are represented and participating in the Challenge...it's just that Army and Navy are the two largest teams in the current Challenge. In fact, we have more teammates deploying to the service each day. Well, we all know that deployment involves sacrifice for all involved....Keep calm and carry on! Representing Army: Danno, Eric, AJ and representing Navy: Richard T. Go Army. Go Navy.

There's always a history with rivalries, and the storied rivalry between Army and Navy is no exception. If the Military Challenge follows the path that the football challenge has taken ...edge goes to Navy. In fact, Navy has won the Army-Navy contest for the last ELEVEN years, and this year also took home the coveted Commander-in-Chief mega-trophy. Meanwhile, finding yourself in the service is sometimes a surprise, and was popularized in movie and song....

Indeed the last time Army actually won the Army-Navy game I was still a third year cadet (aka, a 'cow'). My, my, my how time does fly... Almost makes me feel old. Sometimes. Glad to see that AJ is making a strong showing for Army early on.

Personally, it comes to armed forces specific movies, I can't help but take a nod to the youngest of our sister services, the Air Force, and 1955's Strategic Air Command starring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson. Cold War Americana at its finest :D

Image "Full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes!" Day 6 or 7 of 28

This quote, or something like it, is attributed to Admiral David Farragut of the Federal Navy as his forces entered Mobile Bay against a much smaller Confederate Navy. I thought torpedoes were things that were shot out of submarine tubes, but not so in the 1800s. In those days of battle, torpedoes were actually naval mines....and Farrugut was telling his forces not to dwell on the minefield (brutal), full speed ahead anyway. Farragut's run through the minefield was successful, and took his fleet outside the range of on shore guns. The Confederate Naval forces in the bay were then reduced to just one, the CSS Tennessee. Tennessee had been mightily damaged and was forced to surrender, giving port control to the Union forces.

ImageNavy still has the lead in the current Challenge. Another teammate, Mike M, has joined up with the Army to see if he can help "turn the tide" so to speak. Go Navy. Go Army.

Image Valentine's Challenge starts in TWO days...or one if you're in the southern hemisphere!

The Valentine's Challenge is a great one to do if you are new to rowing or new to Challenges. You've got enough time to complete the challenge without spending half a lifetime on the rowing machine, and there's some instant reward with getting a link to download some special Concept2 valentines. So, if you're looking for a good Challenge to get you started on the Concept2 Challenges....this is the place! Lots of overlap in the Challenges in the next few months...just like regular life?!

Kapt Kristine is off to participate with the Army. Good luck and happy rowing. Go Army. Go Navy.

Agreed. Definitely a must see film :D

Seeing that Navy has a sizeable lead in spite the Army having a very nearly identical team size, I am at first inclined to despair, but then I am reminded the quote by General Douglas MacArthur that "upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that upon other fields on other days will bear the fruits of victory."

To that same end much like my Dad (a Navy veteran) refers to the Navy as "the taxi service for the Marines" so to does TR Fehrenbach in This Kind of War state: "You may fly over a land forever; you may bomb it, atomize it, pulverize it and wipe it clean of life – but if you desire to defend it, protect it, and keep it for civilization, you must do this on the ground, the way the Roman legions did, by putting your young men into the mud." Go Army. Beat Navy

Best,
Eric

To beat Navy, Army needs to put in an extra 5K per person for the next three days...and hope that Navy isn't doing this, too. 58 people....definitely could close the gap....keep the pressure on....!
