As the only Vermonter (I think) on the team, lets clear the air over this syrup thing. Canada is cool, and I'm sure the Catskill's are charming...two facts though: 1. the best ergs come from VERMONT and 2. the best damn maple syrup comes from VERMONT, USA!!! :D You all know its true. Good Day! http://www.vermontmaple.org/

Those bumps on the rail are actually plastic dust that comes off the wheels from all the friction. I use clorox wipes every time I get done. Keeps the rail nice and clean. I also wipe the rollers each time-basically,hold the clorox wipe to the wheel and roll it back and forth once or twice.
No, no, no, those bumps are your life force. The ergo sucks the life force out of your body and dumps it on the rail.

Concept2 recommend using windex to clean it. I simply use a paper towel soaked in plain water.

Actually, the rollers going over the little bumps is just annoying to me. If you saw the rest of my house and shop you'd get a chuckle out of the ocd comment
And as for the syrup, we'll just have to have a "syrup off" and see what's what. I'll do the hard part and be the tester-with the samples appropriately
disguised,of course B) . It would be a hard thing to do, but I'll take the responsibility-onerous task though it may be.

Here in NH, I live about a quarter of a mile from a maple syrup/sugar house. :D Every weekend we have healthy multi-grain & flax pancakes (and eggs, bacon or sausage, fruit, etc.). Forget about the mass-produced stuff like Aunt Jemima or Eggo syrup; there is no substitute for pure maple syrup.

That's what I thought! That's why I've just been scraping those off gently, gingerly placing them in an urn, and somberly placing the urn on my mantelpiece to remember myself by. As my relatives shuffle by, they say, "Poor Izzy... he's not quite all there any more! This proves he's off the rails!"

Actually, I use Simple Green to clean my rail, as it's mild and doesn't affect the sheen or smoothness. (Does the combination of Simple Green + Life Force = Soylent Green?)

Way to take one for the team, man! We'll have to get Cyndi to ante up some of her syrup for testing!

Back to rowing....

Just attempted a new personal 10k record in Carls Corner,TX (old record 39:27.0 @1:58.3 ) --- Instead of breaking the record I came up with some new excuses on the way down to defeat :D

1. It was windy and my open grate model B catches the wind and slows the flywheel down

2. Sweat kept getting in my eyes

3. The sun kept glaring at me

4. The noise from the septic tank pump next to me was distracting (Petro truckstop)

5. Planes kept flying by

6. Birds were chirping

7. I had an itch on my butt and couldn't scratch it for fear of losing time

8. a hot trucker chick winked at me (Ok not really, but I suppose it could happen one day)

9. I'm allergic to Texas

10. A fat gay trucker really did wink at me.

With all that said I still managed a 40:14.7 (2:00.7 pace) --- fair, but nothing to write home about.

TMike

PS- I use silicone spray on the rail -- It works great!

You'll be glad to know that I work at one of those flavor houses that help produce flavors that, when added to corn syrup, mimic maple syrup. Of course, many of those companies are nice enough to include 10% real maple syrup in their pancake syrup.
While it's great for producing a product that hits acceptable price points, is consistent the whole year long, and can last for years in your house - it still can't hold a candle to real maple syrup, not even Canadian maple syrup.
We used to take our toddling son to "Maple Syrup Days" in Cincinnati every year, watching everything from tapping the trees to emptying the hanging buckets of sap into kettles for long, slow cooking over an open fire. The syrup was quite good, but I think that the maple sugaring season is much shorter that far south.
(Our bedroom set is made from slabs of Canadian Maple, to the consternation of any movers we ever hired. Of course, we'd never disrespect Vermont Maple or NH Maple in this way!)

You scare off all the hot trucker chicks with your misuse of silicone! But at least the other fellow appreciated your creative use of lubricants!

The best maple syrup comes from Maine. It's the best because it "has a hint of the great north woods in it". Don't take my word for it, the market agrees. The people vote with the wallets. Look at the 2012 Mapyle Syrup Report from the New England Agricultural Statistics. "The average gallon of syrup, in Maine sold for $53.10 while in Vermont the average gallon sold for $44.70." wlmailhtml:{15F2835B-E549-4CF3-9198-0A829230D6FF}mid://00000012/!x-usc:http://www.nass.usda.gov/Statistics_by_ ... 605mpl.pdf

Take this for what it is worth, but if I was looking to buy a drum of industrial-grade maple syrup, I'd get it from Vermont.
