Re: Buckaroo to Elphaba Transformation

Post by Dnoeske » January 16th, 2013, 5:34 pm

Well, ponder no more! Took my daughter to see WICKED this past weekend, and it finally struck me. Not only is Elphaba the driven, strong, intelligent type as opposed her “blonde” counterpart who is neither (perhaps society’s perceptions of good/evil ??), her passion and statements fit my life right now.. soo bit bit of history.. for the pondering..

From the 1980's to 2011, let's just say I had a “bit” of medical trouble:

3 occurrences of deep vein thrombosis in groin
Uterine fibroid tumor the size of a grapefruit removed
Pulmonary embolism
Epilepsy diagnosis
Foot fibroid tumor ( large grape sized) removed
Stage2 Breast cancer with subsequent chemo and radical surgery
Inoperable foot fibroid tumor (inverse arch 1 1/2” in height)
Frozen shoulder surgery

All this rather took me from a varsity volleyball and basketball player to being unable to stand or walk for much more than 15-20 minutes at a time, and NO desire (or ability at times) to move and exercise.. as each path I had tried eventually closed down and was always advised to simply sit quietly and rest... .

Enter 2011. I did research and found that two medications they had me on MIGHT cause tumor formations. Requested and received a change in medications. Somewhere in the next 6-8 months tumor began to spontaneously shrink and ligaments loosen, to the point where last December I decided only I could work to change my life – and see if exercise was now even possible

Join the gym in December 2011, but found swimming very boring.. Move out (gently) to the weights in January/February – but again – boring. So, in March of 2012, I saw this odd looking rowing machine sitting there.. Started very lightly to see if it hurt my arm as they said it would.. It did not.
Began to row 1-2x per week, about 5,000k per day.. but needed more.. Found C2 site and began to track my rows.. Needed more.. Found the team website and watch LUNATICS for a bit… Hum.. they seem quirky ..Joined the team, and was doing about 7k 3-4x per week.

Enter LUNATICS…

Individual challenge comes out for half marathon.. I say “ I CAN DO THAT”
See 1M club – say “I CAN DO THAT”

Holiday challenge comes.. so I shoot for the starts and target 200k – but then the AJ/K2 publish Antler lights at 300k– I say “ I CAN DO THAT”
January 2012 - reached 2M lifetime meters

Next – VTC comes. And as I know I can now do 300k… I target for 400k - -but then K2 mentions “THE TUB” at 500k.. I quickly calculate the daily average needed and say “I CAN DO THAT” … working split session rows and a few halfmoon rows on the weekends.. will be hard, but.… "I CAN DO THAT"

Already planning on HOW to exactly time the marathon challenge in May 2012 to get all 42K in with work.. and……. So.. am I now an Aimless cowboy? Buskaroo Bonzai ending up wherever life lead? NO.. because....

"I'm thru accepting limits cuz someone said they're so.
Somethings I can not change, but until I try I'll never kno
w”

Have proven to myself there is MUCH we can change in our lives, if we have the commitment and the willingness to try. Much like Elphaba.. And I have had such an excellent type trying these past months!

To AJ and Kona2 – keep the challenges coming! And thank you for the inspirations to try! How will we know WHAT we are capable of without trying?

To you both, and entire Lunatics team – again – from WICKED

“Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you,
Because I knew you,
I have been changed for good.

Thank you for providing the direction and incentives to change my life in such a fun and positive way! Seems a bit obsessive to my family right now -- but..

Warm Regards,

Elphaba / Dana

Wowzer, E/Dana! You have been through a lot and shown great perseverance. Thank you for sharing your story - you never know who your story will help, but it will be someone. The Luna-Tics team is quite supportive and its team members provide a lot of inspiration to each other. Your comment about "seems a bit obsessive to my family right now"....you betcha! One of the great things about the team is that every person here knows just what it takes to get the distances done. You can't always walk into work and say "hey! I just rowed my first marathon!" and have your co-workers understand just what that meant (start measuring for the memory foam for your erg seat now  ), but definitely expect you to tell them anyway! Rowing is addictive, and often helps solve things that aren't about rowing at all. :D You'll be saying I CAN do that to all kinds of things.

Hi Everyone;

I've never actually introduced myself to the Team, so now seemed like a good time :D I came to rowing about 4-months ago or so after I discovered that it was about the machine in the entire gym that didn't hurt the already damage cartilage in my knee (the result of some overly zealous barefoot trail running). In that time, though, I have totally fallen head over heels for the erg and this forum and the online log. I am especially drawn to the longer distances and just completed my first 30k this week (on one of two ergs in a YMCA :D )

Anywho, I joined this team because it seemed like the most support and fun one of the all teams here. Looking forward to getting to know everyone more.

Regards,
Eric (aka, Boog)
Er....I kind of hesitate to ask how you got the nickname Boog...but it's all good. Now that I know that you did the 30K, and that you really like those longer distances, here's a list of some of our Luna-Tic distance awards. I have little doubt that you will be successful at all of them.

Image a supernova designates that the individual has rowed the equivalent of 100,000 m in a 24 hr period (yep....we have one who does this)
Image a red giant designates that the individual has rowed the equivalent or more of 50,000 m in a 24 hr period
Imagea full moon designates that the individual has rowed the equivalent or more of a full marathon 42,195 m in a 24 hr period
Image a half moon designates that the individual has rowed the equivalent or more of a half marathon 21,097 m in a 24 hr period

half or full marathons are completed in one sitting

More Canadian Thunder! Harold is wasting no time getting to the oar - he's got a cat to rescue from the virtual waters, and that cat is looking kind of grumpy at having been in the water! Way to row, Harold !
