Actually-glad to see you up on the stat list again Heather.
Thanks, Smitty. It's good to be back (Sorry for the delay in responding; I've just caught up on all the posts for the last few pages).

As for the flight of the Hummingbird, I doubt it sincerely considering that I've had to resort to Jedi mind-tricks to reach 15K routinely.... But who knows what that little puppy will get up to on top of his doghouse as the weeks pass! After all, we're nearly together again on the team page. (Is that the soundtrack from Jaws I hear in the background?? Ooooooo)

Merry Christmas to All, and a happy New Year too!
Wow-Heather hit 8 Million meters-none too shabby. Now on to the Jan challenge. I have been starting to train for the Blackburn Challenge-I plan on kickin butt and takin names this year :) Who's up for a little row/paddle in July?? I found it to be a totally amazing thing-great people-awesome scenery, and 20+ miles on the water. My meters are down lately, but I have really been concentrating on correct form and what a difference in how hard a workout is if you are going for good form. Guess I'll see if my goal is too ambitious or not.

I put in my 8 cents - I entered a 2K I did the other night. If we can't make up the other .58 cents, in order to 'save face', I recommend group harakiri... okay, maybe not so much.
Great month of rowing, even if we did rely on David too much...

I did it! I did it! I finished the 200k challenge! Yipee! Yipee! Ohboyohboyohboy... pant pant pant.... Where was I? Oh yeah...I did it! I finished...

I also passed my 8M lifetime meters the other day, but because I saw it coming a few weeks ago, I didn't notice when I passed it. (And why should I? Compared to where I should have been by now...
Speaking of which, ONTO the next challenge, in which last year many of us won the coveted Iron Ass award! (Am I right in thinking that rowing is the only sport you can get buns of steel by sitting on them?)

For now, best wishes to all Timbuktooians for the holiday season!

Heather.
Where you "should" have been?! A friend of mine used to describe that as "should"ing on yourself. I find it best to let the "shoulds" stay in the past, maybe pull them out for a minute here and there to learn a lesson or plot a strategy, but then into the incinerator they go. (That goes for broken New Year's resolutions too... Nobody [normal] ever quite does them 100%, but I at least want to get SOME mileage out of them, just can't beat myself up on the parts I don't quite accomplish. There IS always tomorrow...) That is not a bad strategy for the Coulds and Woulds as well...

Yay, EIGHT MILLION METER WOMAN! (I'm at 8.6MM, so you're right in my rear-view mirror...)

I get my buns of steel by leaving them out of the breadbox for a week. (I have to admit that I just caved and ordered a cushion for my erg seat for $25 on e-Bay. This, after giving in on the rowing gloves last year. I'm getting soft and wimpy in my old age!)

An amazing holiday season to you, Heather, and to all our amazing TimbukTOOians!

No rest for me either, but my unrest took the form of a nice 8-mile trail run... then cooking and baking and cleaning up and dishes and..........

I've been rowing 500m every day for a couple of weeks - damper setting 1 @ about 3:00 split, so it's really been more stretching than rowing and I haven't logged any of it.

Yesterday I went for a slow 1k which felt good so I followed it up with a 2k at about 2:05 pace and that felt good as well. I'll hold judgement for a few days to see how it goes - I've had several false starts recently.

That's nice. A little 2k with 2:05 splits? Dude, that would have literally killed me six months ago - and I had already been rowing for a year at that point. I want to be fast when I grow up.

Hi team,

Today, my daughter, age 9, asked me if she could start rowing. I figured to get her excited about it, I'd get her an account in the logbook. So, we signed her up and registered her with TimbukTOO. I don't know how long this enthusiasm will last. It's likely to be fleeting, but I try to encourage athletic/fitness endeavors, so... She did 2200m today before calling it a day. She might think it's cool to participate in the January team challenge. What would you think? It wouldn't be good for our meters per capita statistic, but could add a few more meters to our sum.

Row on,
Cindy

It's strange how time distorts reality. 2:05 was actually really fast for me about 9 months ago. Now it's what I have to row with an injury.

I never realized, over the last year or so, that I had made any progress - the PR's I achieved never fit in to the overall picture, somehow.

Now I look back on it and it amazes me - I really have made progress - a lot of it. Who woulda thunk?

Okay, everybody, we need to get serious about signing up for the January Virtual Team Challenge... We have 26 signed up already, but we need to get to 60 or so.
For the newbies: TimbukTOO is the team's name for the whole year round, and that's considered an "Affiliation". For challenges, you need to join our "Team", which is called TimbukTWO. Consider your finding the Team feature on your profile page, joining the team, then joining specifically the VTC 2013 as your first TimbukTWO adventure...
Also, you can set a goal for the month of January that we'll track for you daily. You can later increase or decrease your goal as Real Life gets in the way, but we found that: 1) Those who set public goals rowed more than twice as much on average as those who didn't and 2) Almost 90% of those that set those goals reached them.

Here are the latest people to sign up:
A big welcome to new team member Jesper Nielsen! Thanks for choosing us from all the excellent choices out there!
A welcome back to Dave Hall, who has rowed challenges with us in the past!
Thank you to year-round TimbukTOOians Cindy KR, Jonathan R, Aditya P & Ron M for rolling up your sleeves and challenging yourselves together with some help from your friends!

Yes, back then you were all skin & bones, just without the skin! Now, you've fleshed out a bit...

Dude, I don't even acknowledge 1 as a setting on the erg. I try to make sure that 1 STAYS the loneliest number. Next week, 1.5. The week after, 2. Then 2.5, then 3. Anything less than 3 wasn't meant for the male of the species. (Some day in the future, when you're rowing pain-free, get the number up to 4.5, which is roughly the equivalent of water rowing.)
If 2:05 is taking it somewhat slow, row everything in the 2:15-2:20 range for now. Concentrate on good form, esp. for the injured areas. For a shoulder, lets say, make sure you're [pushing back first with the legs, then] pulling back with your body, then arms - using the shoulder only as a hinge, not a source of power.
Drop the machismo - you got the babe already. Good form, slow build-up, plenty of rest days - and all the studliness will still be there for you at the end of the journey...

We'd love to have her pulling with us! Forget about our per capita, this is about good health habits.
Don't let her burn out by having her row till she gets bored. Maybe 1K or 1.5K for 3-4 times a week, working up to 2-2.5K, more if she really enjoys it. Maybe hang a couple of pics of champion female rowers near the erg, so she can see the balance of health, beauty, strength and grace these women have achieved.
As her mom, you also need to decide if you want a picture of your 9 year old on the Internet.

As extra motivation, maybe she can set up some fun competition with Mark E's daughter Kat (Katerina)...
