Re: New World Best 6K, 60-69
Wow! I doubt if anyone has ever gotten to that level. I was hoping, if I can stay healthy - a big if - that I might reach 9500. I doubt if Oesterling is even aware of nonathlon or is interested.

I see that you and Oesterling are both in Hawaii. Do you know him? I realize that the state has a sizable population, but the rowing community is rather small, so I thought that it might be possible. I see that he is on a different island, so lowers the probability a bit.

Re: New World Best 6K, 60-69
TJ Oesterling has been my best friend for ten years.
In 2002 at the Central YMCA in Honolulu, I noticed that he warmed up for his strength workouts by erging for 30 minutes @ 1:45.
After observing this several times and checking the C2 rankings, I approached and asked, "Do you have any idea how good you are?"
The rest is history, as they say.
He did enter his 2013 times in the Nonathlon, but subsequently deleted them, because he felt it was unseemly bragging.

Re: New World Best 6K, 60-69
Why hide the obvioius. At this point in time Oesterling is the best indoor rower in the world taking into account age. Not posting is a misrepresentation of that reality. He represents the possible. He shows what big, fit, strong athletes can do on an indoor rower. I suspect that there are other Oesterling-type rowers out there who will be motivated by his times. For the most part, I don't think that indoor rowing attracts the best athletes. Poeple like Oesterling can change that. He should be encouraged to post his times. It is hard not to admire his kind of performance and excellence. The fact that he has no competition is not his fault. So, please, post your times.
I actually think that TJ would be 63 for nonathlon - one's age on May 1. In that case, the total score would be more like 9566.

Re: New World Best 6K, 60-69
I had forgotten the age-on-May-1 rule. I think the Nonathlon truncates each score; if so, TJ's total would be 9,561.
Keep in mind that when Paul Harris next updates the information base behind the scoring system, TJ's 2013 results will be included, which will raise the bar for future 60-69 year olds. So he will "represent the possible," albeit not publicly.

I doubt if much would change because TJ's results this year are very similar to last year. Paul's system does not permit unusual times to skew his standards.

Re: New World Best 6K, 60-69
Ralph...please give TJ my regards! I knew he was "the real deal" but never saw a posting here or anywhere from him or those who may know him. I must say that he's an inspiration to us "slugs" in the age bracket, as much as Bob is an inspiration to us all on keeping on with the erging as we age. And evidently a bit humble too.Ralph Earle wrote:TJ Oesterling has been my best friend for ten years.

I just love this.Ralph Earle wrote: ... I approached and asked, "Do you have any idea how good you are?"

He blew away everyone on the UK's Challenge Series one year too if I'm not mistaken. Please add my own encouragement to Jim's to have him enter his times into the Nonathlon and any other rankings and challenges. While I've occasionally had issues with entries that I have felt were fraudulent I've always wanted to see the best legitimate scores posted to know where we all really stand.

Re: New World Best 6K, 60-69
I'll pass everyone's encouragements along, but TJ's pretty insistent about avoiding the limelight as much as possible.
Re: New World Best 6K, 60-69
Ralph... please inform TJ that he is conspicuous by his absence. There's nothing I'd like more than to see him participating in the Nonathlon. With his talent he should be 'seen' so that the many that do join in can be inspired by his remarkable achievements. He deserves recognition. I thought he must have gone into retirement.

Re: New World Best 6K, 60-69
For what it's worth, he is officially welcome to take part
Scoring update coming soon (I have to use up some vacation before the end of the year, and what better to do in that time?!)
