Made in USA?

Post by jgawlik » September 18th, 2012, 1:34 pm

Are the ergs still made in the USA or has some/all of the production been shifted out of country? I'm looking at getting a Model D again, gavemy old one to my brother last year. The answer will not change my decision to get one, I just would like to know if I'm supporting a made in the USA product.

I believe c2john answered the same question some time ago. From what I can remember the alloy main frame is made locally but most of the other components including the monitor come from various different parts of Asia.
PBs: 2K 6:13.4, 5K 16:32, 6K 19:55, 10K 33:49, 30min 8849m, 60min 17,309m
Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

Would be pretty hard to break it down as a percentage but the design is done in the USA and many parts in the likes of the monitor are simply not made in the USA, but then neither are the parts in anyone else's monitor either.

The quality control and the build is very good as they are assembled in the USA and I have found that my Model D2 has required very little modification and only recently I decided to make my own component for something on it that keeps breaking, but even that wouldn't be a problem for everyone.

The monitor design and firmware as well as build is excellent these days and is one of the strong points of the Concept 2. Yes I can suggest some improvements but technology is going forward so fast it's hard to keep up but in reality it does everything you need it to do.

Have had really good support out of the USA with one of the engineers at Concept 2 being exceptional.

Carl,
Anyone else's monitor doesn't include the Rowperfect "indoor Sculler" monitor. Their monitor is sourced from within Australia and manufactured by the South Australian company "Coxmate" that makes performance monitors for rowing boats. They also have their own software for boats which is being adapted to suit the Rowperfect erg. I'm told that at least 95% of the Rowperfect erg is made in Australia. With the Aussie dollar being so strong that's the reason why Aussie made Rowperfects are so expensive.

They can tweek the numbers any way they want at the end of the day, Australia doesn't make any Semiconductors and it's unlikley the PCB is made there either or the LCD but because it's "Assembled" in Aussie they probably count it as 100% made in Australia. Like I said pretty hard to break it down with any accuracy really, what really counts is the final product and then down the track the support you receive for it.

The D, E, Dynamic and Skierg are all assembled, tested and packaged in Morrisville, Vermont. Most of the metal components such as the frame, flywheel, axles, etc are sourced in Vermont. Electronics come from Asia. Some of the injection molded parts such as the handle, footplates, caster feet, seat and others are produced in China or Taiwan, while other larger moldings such as the fan and flywheel covers are produced domestically.
Concept2 is a global company, with roughly half of the oars and ergs we produce being sold outside of North America. Purchasing components and services from outside North America where price and quality are competitive simply makes good sense. C2JonW

+1
Global economy and such. The end product is great. Can't argue that.
Reward the best suppliers. If that isn’t your next-door neighbor then have a frank chat with him about why his product didn’t make the cut. If he can’t figure out how to be competitive then he is in the wrong line of work.
Can we get back to rowing?
