Sorry to hear about your illness. This is the first time I've been sick since I started rowing (May/June 2011). I credit rowing (and maybe less so those Emergen-C drinks I've been mixing) with keeping me healthy. I might change my tune if those Emergen-C folks would pony up a sponsorship of Team Timbuktoo.

I don't know much about any rat or rhinoceros (I think you spelled it wrong :P Wikipedia shows this to be the correct spelling). What I do know is that the interwebs is a dirty place. I've seen some things on here that you can't un-see. I go through an elaborate purification ceremony after each session on the computer. It involves lots of eyewash and a neti pot. :mrgreen:

I do plan to launch an impressive self-improvement program complete with before and after pictures. I’m thinking of calling it the Belly Losing Ankle Cracking Knee Sizzling Mission In Total Humiliation Plan. Let's call it the Blacksmith Plan for short.

It is time to ratchet things up a notch, complete a 100k, and squeeze into a rowing uni for 2013.

Andy, you are an absolute HOOT! I LOVE the Blacksmith Plan!! Although the H could be for "Hot-ification" instead of humiliation...

And you feel better too, Cap'n!! I'll even take over all the tater-peeling from ya.

Missed posting to David, glad you're back! Did you catch anything on your deep-sea adventure? Pictures, please!

What can I do, the best study on immune system lowering was done in 2005 at the U of Illinois on 3 groups of rats exposed to the flu. Sedentary ones had an 43% survival rate, moderately exercised rats (20-30 minutes a day) survived at an 82% clip, but only 30% of the heavily exercised ones (2.5hrs/day) survived. However, the ones who exercised to death got big, golden exercise wheels in Rat Heaven.

With people, the results were less astounding. U of South Carolina: People who exercised moderately got 20% less upper respiratory infections. Another study found that people running more than 60 miles a week in preparation for the LA Marathon tipped the balance to MORE colds.

I know I could've said I caught a cold or a URI, but with my honker, I'm legally required to call it a rhinovirus (not to mention having to register my proboscis at the police station as a potentially deadly weapon).

You might be better off with the "Quickly Undergoing A Total Revamping Of Unproductive eXercise" program.

On another note, did a 10k this AM for a new best for me. 42.005-dropped a full minute and a half off my old one. Not bad for a fat 47 year old :shock:

So here's the funny thing. During the row, it hurts at first, but the more I row, the less it hurts - as long as I don't row hard. By the end of the row the ankle's just fine and I can walk on it without any pain. It's only after I rest for a while, and the next day, that the pain returns.

I am glad to be back as well.... It is great visiting family and I miss the great weather, But is great to be back to a regular routine of rowing at my club getting everything back on my log card and such.. Had a great day fishing with older brother and my daughter and my sisters kids, did a Half day of party boat fishing off of Seabrook NH... just did some jigging for Mackerel between the 6 of us we ended with a good bucket as you see attached...

We did take a number of the mackerel back and cooked them up on the grill for dinner that night... tasted great attached

Hi David, you must have brought the hot and humid weather with you from Texas when you came visiting here in New Hampshire! :lol:

Glad to see you had a good time visiting family and enjoyed some productive fishing. We used to go clamming in Seabrook, and there are some great old-school deep-fried seafood restaurants out that way. Not very healthy ... But very tasty!

Goegeous weather today, dry and cool. Hoping for some good rowing today!

Hey David, looks like you had a great time!! I was surprised by the mackerel though -- I was picturing you wrestling a 1000-pound Marlin or swordfish into the boat! :lol: All those hours of watching The American Sportsman with my dad when I was a kid I guess! (Who here is old enough to remember that show?)

Here's a shot of me from our recent Utah trip. This was at the summit of one of the trails, at about 11,000 feet elevation. Really beautiful up there!! The trails were uber-rocky. This was a relatively clear part of this one!

Thank goodness for rowing, keeping us in shape to continue to do stuff like this as we get old(er) and decrepit(er).
