Andy, your methods are very unique! With the damper set so low, and your strokes per minute so low, does your heart rate likewise stay low?

When I am rowing for a PB below 10K, my heart rate definitely gets up there.

Thanks

And right back out of commission - this is starting to get annoying.

One more day of rest and will try again tomorrow.

My max output at 20spm with a #1 damper is 2:00/500m. I could probably do a 2k like that before I'd crash. However, that's not my deal. I try to keep my hear rate low for health reasons. I can't maintain peak heart rates like the CRASH-B hopefuls so I look at distance as my challenge more than times.

Breathing through my nose helps. A "conversational pace" is the aim. I'm really surprised that I can get more and more done at the same heart rate over time. Let's say that 110bpm would get me a 3:00/500m over 21,097m a year ago. I've got that down to almost 2:30 a year later at the same heart rate and distance. I have no idea what kind of times I'll post a year from now, but I hope to be more focused on finishing 100k than posting a faster marathon time.

hello everyone, i see a lot of questions here about rowing technique and training and wonder if people know about the very good Concept 2 information that is available? http://www.concept2.com/us/training/resources.asp
Why do people celebrate getting a year older?

Here's a little nugget about the Blackburn Challenge next Saturday-"The dory division is one of the most grueling, they suffer twice as much as the other competitors." Hmmmm. To paraphrase Gimli from one of the Lord of the Rings movies (and NO, I'm not a geek of some sort-it's just something that stuck in my head) "Overwhelming odds, small chance of success-Why not?"

And what's wrong with being a geek?!?!? I resemble that remark!! Gimli had a lot of good lines, including that one.

Hey all,
Just got back from a test row on the Hudson with the new foot brace(mahogany of course-to go with the mahogany boat) installed-2 hours rowing time. What a difference. I am reasonably confident in being able to complete the race in under 6 hours. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm going to do a 3 or 4 hour row tomorrow, then just go easy till the race. My only concern is how not to go too hard too early and not complete it. I did that 6 hour + row last week (with no foot brace), so I have an idea of how hard I can go to make the time. The hard part is, I was not sore at all the day after, so I know I can go harder-but, how to figure out how much harder?? If only my muscles had a throttle, it'd be easy to just go a little bit harder

Hey, best of luck to you Mark!

Just circling back to the Gimli quote, and being a geek: I think it is no mere coincidence that you are going to be in the DORY division. You see, Gimli's father was Gloin, who was one of the twelve dwarves traveling with Bilbo Baggins when he stumbled upon the One Ring. One of Gloin's dwarven companions on that trip was named DORI!

Yup, I am a geek.
