I'm curious about that statement. Have comparisons been made between CRASH-B results and submitted times? Of course, Crash-B is for 2000m. If one does not self-submit for all other distances, then there is no central place for performances. I would think that top rowers would submit their times. If they don't, they can hardly be regarded as top rowers. They may be unknown, but not top.
The best results are set by otw rowers, those don't rank or row at crash B. Most rows are test rows and are kept hidden for the competition.
If I look over here in holland, almost never a sub 6 2k is entered in the rankings, at the dutch championships there are 2k rowed at sub 6, but even there most toprowers are not present. The same goes for Germany. There championship is in kettwig Essen, plenty of sub 6 rows, never in the rankings.
For other distances it is even worse.
Toprowers are far from unknown, for them the c2 is only a training tool, nothing more. The rankings don't mean nothing for them.
On the 2k over here I have been in the ranks in the top 5 sometimes, but at the nat. championships almost 100 people had a faster 2k.... non of them ranked.
I think in the age groups it may be a bit different, but even there we have a 20 min race and those 5/6 k like results again never het ranked.... And I have seen (old) olympian gold winners pull very ok ish results.
