:D That's okay, Peter H! You were watching the numbers, too! Sometimes you have to act quickly when you start copying the numbers and realize that we are only 949 m away from 8,888,888 ...row 'em and enter them in the logbook...and take the picture.. :D

Funny story- Brayden, Allie, and I had watched a Bigfoot movie on TV and then we were getting ready for Ashlee's Girl Scout graduation. I took a quick shower and puy my dress shorts on. Went to look for a nice shirt and Brayden saw me shirtless. He said "Gramps, you are hairy all over like a Bigfoot. Are you part Bigfoot? " Couldn't stop laughing all day.

Welcome to returning teammates: Robyn, Katerina, Tim K, Robert H and Tom R! Here's wishing you all a wonderful 2013 Rowing (and baseball) season!

Looking back at the posting of the meters picture, I just meant that sometimes the moments are fleeting and you have to take a picture of the meter totals (didn't mean to be a show off). During the time that Peter H was adding his meters into the mix, I was struggling with getting the photo uploaded into Photobucket. If anyone has tried to take a photo of your computer screen, maybe you can relate to all the background squiggles and iridescence that shows up in the photo. I ended up having to do a print screen and then take a photo of that to get the totals (not that you needed to know all that, but maybe someone else knows how to do this easier!). I am DELIGHTED when our meter totals go up - although all those eights were kind of perfect looking...and they mean a lot to this team symbolically, too. So keep cranking those meters, Peter H !

Had a bunny camped outside my window this morning as I was getting the stats put in order. I'm taking it as an omen!

Post by Kona2 » May 23rd, 2012, 11:39 am

Was watching the televised World Rowing Championships last night, and thanks to some of our teammates who share their stories of on the water rowing, I was surprised that I knew a lot of the rowing terminology. The World Rowing Championships, and another regatta held in Lucerne today were the last opportunities for Olympic qualifications. I wondered if there was any advantage provided by the specific lane assignment a boat draws? Seems that this is true for most sporting events, so logic says it is probably true for rowing ....

Image
Each host city for the Paralympics creates a logo that incorporates the Paralympic logo to commemorate the games held in their city. The London Paralympic Games begin in 100 days - and how cool was this: to mark the milestone of 100 days and counting, the Paralympics symbol was projected onto the white cliffs of Dover!

Image

And welcome returning teammates Jerry H and Larry E - it's going to be a grand season for the Luna-Tics as we shoot for the moon! Some serious mooning going on, btw...and the number gnomes were out in force yesterday in Arkansas and Connecticut. Jim, Bobbie and Jane all rowed repeater numbers...maybe it was the fudge swirl and chocolate chip ice cream euphoria (at least for Jim and Bobbie)...

Welcome back to Walter and to James G (aka "enrage"). As Memorial Day weekend approaches, it's a good reminder that we have many teammates who are either in current military service or who are veterans - and to say thank you for your service. My dad was an Army Ranger. Don't know if the Ranger training still occurs primarily in Dahlonega, Georgia or not, but it was an interesting place to be a kid.

I've captured the numbers for the day, and will post stats later in the day. In the meantime, have a great day of rowing!

Welcome back to Walter, James G. and everyone else, glad to have you with us again. I agree Barb, thanks to all military vets, past and present.
There is a neat article in the Concept2 spring update newsletter about the Overcoming Disabilities team. It is on p. 6 and 7. With my technical liabilities, I can't get it to print or copy, but great article. Thank you C2 for recognising the accomplishments of the team. They are the best and I know they all will be excited to read it. Happy to be a small part of that team and this team.

The newsletter is hard to find when you are signed in to your logbook, so I have done a copy and paste of the article.
Here's the newsletter article: and a very complimentary one it is. Well deserved accolades for Overcoming Disabilities. I'll bet you get your top ten finish in the next virtual teams challenge. You are all inspirational.

Overcoming Disabilities—Not Just a Name

Every once in a while, if you’re lucky, you meet someone who inspires you. In our case, we were
especially lucky to “meet” a group of people who have inspired us—a virtual rowing team called
Overcoming Disabilities. Every year in January, Concept2 hosts the Virtual Team Challenge. It’s a month-long challenge
with the goal of rowing or skiing as many meters as possible. A virtual team is not based on or around
a specific physical location, but is made up of anyone from anywhere who wants to participate.
Team members connect online through the Concept2 Online Logbook—a free web-based
application that allows you to record your rowing and skiing workouts, track your total meters and
compare your results with other participants from around the world. Overcoming Disabilities’ 20 team members all
have a physical or intellectual disability. Despite this, their team had the highest number of meters rowed per
participant during the Virtual Team Challenge—an impressive 550,237 meters per person! They finished in
11th place overall with 11,004,742 total meters rowed.

Team captain Jim Kielma spoke for the team and said, “We all love the erg and the way it makes
us feel fit. It allows us to compete on an even playing field and reenter the world
of athletics. The Concept2 Indoor Rower makes it possible for anyone to enjoy a great workout no matter
what their ability or disability. We had hoped for a top ten finish but were so blown away by the meter/rower
numbers. We do hope to inspire everyone, able or challenged, to never give up, keep trying and enjoy life.
These teammates/ friends inspire me daily, and I am proud to say we are friends.”

Very nice. Well deserved!

Also welcome back to Charles B, another active military teammate.

Once again, Kona sent me on a google search for whatever the heck she was talking about:

This flight is the second-ever flight for Dragon, and a defining moment for the burgeoning field of commercial spaceflight. SpaceX, based in Hawthorne, Calif., was founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who also co-founded the online payment service PayPal.

Musk, who has been posting Dragon mission updates on Twitter, said he got an unexpected call of support on Wednesday: "The President just called to say congrats. Caller ID was blocked, so at first I thought it was a telemarketer :)" Musk wrote.
