TimbukTOO Team Room
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
When I saw there was a Global Marathon Challenge this month, I figured "ya, I'll do one half-marathon". And I did one, and it was hard, and figured I paid my dues.
Now I see David rowed 15 HMs and Jerry 5 HMs, Walter and John each rowed 3 HMs, Kyle, Izz, and Kenny each rowed two HMs, and Glenn, Joseph, Matthew, Terri, Keith, Lisa, Roger, Brent, and Lee also rowed a HM.
And on top of that, I see Walter rowed three FMs and Andy, Izz, and Jerry also rowed FMs.
Talk about inspiration!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
David rowed one too, but in his reported meters yesterday, he was ONE STINKIN' METER SHORT of reporting a FM -- at 42,194 meters! David, if you read this, go edit your entry! That HAS to be wrong. If anyone deserves to be up on that honor board, it's you!!!CONLEJM wrote:When I saw there was a Global Marathon Challenge this month, I figured "ya, I'll do one half-marathon". Thank you all for your supportive comments. We don't know if it was the humor that caused folks to drop off the team, and today, folks are back. (Yay!!! ) However, now we've lost Pat.
I can only speak for myself, but I'm on this team and continue to do what I do here because it keeps me active and rowing. I have found that in this endeavor -- and in so many others in my life -- that if I come to it with an attitude of giving instead of recieving, check my needs and ego at the door, and stretch my participation and effort beyond my comfort zone, I reap benefits well beyond anything I could have otherwise hoped for. So...
LET'S ROW, TIMBUKTOO!!!!!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Congratulations to all who participated in the Global Marathon Challenge! What an awesome turnout by our team, and an inspiring start to the season. Our final list seems to be:
Full Marathons:
Walter (times 3!!), Izzz, Andy, Jerry, and David (I'm spotting him that meter, dammit!)
Half Marathons:
Glenn, Joseph, David (15!!), Walter (3), John (3), Matthew, Terri, Keith, Kyle (2), Izz (2), Kenny (2), Jerry (5), me, Roger, Brent, Jim, And Lee.
Participation was way up over 2010 (no results available for 2011 -- was there a challenge? I can't remember), where only John had a full marathon and there were 5 Tooians with halfs.
Next up on the challenge front, another individual challenge: The Summer Solstice Challenge.
■ Row or ski 21,000 meters on June 20.
■ Meters can be rowed/skied all at once in one workout or over several workouts throughout the day.
■ If you add on 97 more meters to row/ski 21,097 meters, or a half-marathon, it needs to be
rowed/skied all at once in order to qualify to be a ranked piece.
■ This is an individual challenge. (You do not need to belong to a team to participate.)
■ Meters must be entered online.
■ Indoor rower, SkiErg, on water and on snow meters count. You can combine meters to reach 21,000 meters.

I'd like to voice my support for Izzy and LIsa too, I'm so grateful for the extra work they do to keep us together and informed. Also +1 on the pirate slang... it has certainly whipped me into shape! Lisa posted this a few days ago-" Kyle J - 20,453 Add just a smidge and you could HM too..." That's the reason I did my first 2 HMs, thank you Lisa. My meters are a little down today, I took my 1st yoga class tonight. Holy harder than it looks, Batman! I got through it because thanks to Timbuktoo I was proudly wearing my million meter club t-shirt, thats what I'm talkin' about!!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
National Lampoon was a bit too "adult" for my High School self in the '70s. Just remember the furor over the Volkswagen spoof ad: "If Ted Kennedy drove a Volkswagen, he'd be President today.", which got them pulled from newsstands. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexdroog70/2701038371/) Guess the Kennedys took the humor the right - um, I mean wrong - way...brick1101 wrote:...I'm sorry to read here about humor being taken the wrong way. I was reminded of one of my old journal entries which shows how things can be misread. Here it is...
Being of age in the 1970’s, one publication I loved to read was The National Lampoon. The wit and satire was so perfect for that time in history...
I was a Mad Magazine reader at the time. Here's a political nugget from Mad, 1970:
Guaranteed Effective All-Occasion Non-Slanderous Political Smear Speech
By Bill Garvin, MAD #139, December 1970
My fellow citizens, it is an honor and a pleasure to be here today. My opponent has openly admitted he feels an affinity toward your city, but I happen to LIKE this area. It might be a salubrious place to him, but to me it is one of the nation's most delightful garden spots!
When I embarked upon this political campaign I hoped that it could be conducted on a high level, and that my opponent would be willing to stick to the issues. Unfortunately, he has decided to be tractable instead -- to indulge in unequivocal language, to eschew the use of outright lies in his speeches, and even to make repeated veracious statements about me.
At first, I tried to ignore these scrupulous, unvarnished fidelities. Now I do so no longer. If my opponent wants a fight, he's going to get one!
It might be instructive to start with his background. My friends, have you ever accidentally dislodged a rock on the ground and seen what was underneath ? Well, exploring my opponent's background is dissimilar. All the slime and filth and corruption you could possibly imagine, even in your wildest dreams, are glaringly nonexistent in this man's life. And even during his childhood!
Let us take a very quick look at that childhood: It is a known fact that, on a number of occasions, he emulated older boys at a certain playground. It is also known that his parents not only permitted him to masticate excessively in their presence, but even urged him to do so. Most explicable of all, this man who poses as a paragon of virtue exacerbated his own sister while they were both teenagers !
I ask you, my fellow Americans: is this the kind of person we want in public office to set an example for our youth ? Of course, it's not surprising that he should have such a typically pristine background -- no, not when you consider the other members of his family:
His female relatives put on a constant pose of purity and innocence, and claim they are inscrutable, yet every one of them has taken part in hortatory activities...
The men in the family are likewise completely amenable to moral suasion...
My opponent's second cousin is a Mormon...
His uncle was a flagrant heterosexual...
His sister, who has always been obsessed by sects, once worked as a proselyte outside a church...
His father was secretly chagrined at least a dozen times by matters of a pecuniary nature...
His youngest brother wrote an essay extolling the virtues of being a homosapien...
His great-aunt expired from a degenerative disease...
His nephew subscribes to a phonographic magazine...
His wife was a thespian before their marriage, and even performed the act in front of paying customers...
And his own mother had to resign from a women's organization in her later years because she was an admitted sexagenarian!
Now what shall we say of the man himself ?
I can tell you in solemn truth that he is the very antithesis of political radicalism, economic irresponsibility, and personal depravity. His own record proves that he has frequently discountenanced treasonable, un-American philosophies and has perpetrated many overt acts as well.
He perambulated his infant son on the street!
He practiced nepotism with his uncle and first cousin!
He attempted to interest a 13-year-old girl in philately!
He participated in a seance at a private residence where, among other odd goings-on, there was incense!
He has declared himself in favor of more homogeniety on college campuses!
He has advocated social intercourse in mixed company -- and has taken part in such gatherings himself!
He has been deliberately averse to crime in our streets!
He has urged our Protestant and Jewish citizens to develop more catholic tastes!
Last summer he committed a piscatorial act on a boat that was flying the American flag!
Finally, at a time when we must be on our guard against all foreign "isms", he has coolly announced his belief in altruism -- and his fervent hope that some day this entire nation will be altruistic!
I beg you, my friends, to oppose this man whose life and work and ideas are so openly and avowedly compatible with our American way of life. A vote for him would be a vote for the perpetuation of everything we hold dear.
The facts are clear; the record speaks for itself. Do your duty.

Pretty funny!! I used to love reading my older brothers' MAD. Didn't understand all of it at that early age, but even that helped develop my kooky sense of humor!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Thanks for the link Keith. This Nonathlon is a good idea; trying to standardize race results for age/gender/weight. I meant to sign up last season but didn't get around to it. I signed up and entered my data for this 2013 season.tobyj wrote:The Nonathalon link is http://nonathlon.com if anyone fancies it next season
I am not sure I like this "relative scoring" methodology as much as I like the straightforward Concept 2 ranking system. For example, a lightweight female age 60 rowing at the 95th percentile (for her age/weight/gender) across nine or ten distances would out-rank a heavyweight male age 30 rowing at the 90th percentile (for his age/weight/gender) across nine or ten distances, even though the 30-year old male's absolute rates of speed are probably 25% to 30% faster than the 60-year female's. I get what they are trying to do ... But in this example the male is faster, plain and simple.
The Nonathlon is definitely a good idea, and it has inspired me to focus on my shorter distance speeds (where I am definitely slower), and may persuade me to row a full marathon (if only for the bonus 100 points). But ultimately for me I benefit from comparing myself against men my own age and weight class.
But I am amazed at the current Nonathlon champ's consistent dominance across all distances. She is a phenomenon!
Thanks again, and I wish you great rowing success this season!
Jim
