Why row to the moon?
Always fine to ask how some of our goals and/or traditions got started ... and sometimes memory of these is fuzzy. The team was formed initially 11 years ago by a guy named Matt Forsbaka, and he worked for NASA. The distance to the moon seemed a worthy goal...and it probably reflected some projects that he was working on. But many of us don't work with NASA, and yet we were drawn to this team with it's funny name and seemingly outrageous goal (and, it should be noted that Free Spirits was the first team to row to the moon...and they went on to do a few orbits around Jupiter, etc.).
I think members of this team live for adventure in their lives, and this goal of going to the moon (which has now morphed into the quest for a billion meters...and a return to the moon) fits well. When we first set the goal for the moon, we didn't really track meters until about five years ago...and then when the numbers were put out in front of us with percentage completions, distance more to the moon -- we went for it. We outlined a plan to visit a lot of the moon geography, and determined the distance across certain craters, and things like that. Our March 1st landing came in the middle of March Madness, and the World Erg Challenges and we sort of lost sight of some of the moon exploration. We could spend some time there this next time while we're setting some new teammate names on our Luna-Tic Moon Visitor Plaque.
Here are the reasons that NASA thinks it's important to return to the moon: http://www.nasa.gov/pdf/163561main_WhyT ... 090818.pdf
So - not sure if that exactly answers your question, Jodi.

Holding back... nah, just stupid! A year seems to be just long enough to forget what this distance rowing is really like.Kona2 wrote:Woohoo! We've got some more mooners to celebrate...gotta say that I think Aussie Dave H has been holding back... ...he rowed a FULL marathon...
Not sure why I thought it was a good thing to do, although with 10k's to go I was easily going to beat my PB for the distance by several minutes - until the leg cramps kicked in! For a while there the legs were straight and rigid, and it was arms only moving that handle - until they started complaining too.
I managed to relax and complete the row without too much pain, however the rest of the day was pretty "gentle".
I have been a combination of busy and lazy (if that makes sense... when the work finally finishes and I have time to row, it is easy to put it off due to tiredness and possessing a black belt in procrastination!).
As usual, lots of good work here by lots of people while I have been AWOL - congratulations to all you achievers; and a belated congrats to Baz and Janet on your 28 years... youre one year ahead of us - and I trust you will maintain that lead for a long time to come!
Cheers,
Dave

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
I parrot Dave on the "not sure why I thought it was a good thing to do" sentiment. I was feeling sluggish this morning and burned out with my regular workouts, so for some insane reason I thought it would be a good day to get a half moon on the books for the challenge. What was I thinking?!! My worst row...EVER! If it had been my first half it would have been my last. The problem was that I started too late in the morning, the thermometer in my gym said 86 degrees, but that didn't take into account the humidity, which was rediculous as we had the craziest thunderstorm last night (I thought there was a full drum corp with...what are those loud things you clap together? hm, can't remember. Anyway.. and flash-bangs going off every few minutes) that dumped 3.5 inches of rain overnight and another 1/2 inch this afternoon. We need the rain, so I'm not complaining, but it doesn't do much good when it comes all at once like that after weeks and weeks of 90 degree weather.
So, I got the half-moon, but it was an ugly one to say the least. Ugh!

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Welcome to the team Jay R. Glad you are a fan of the Hunley. Clive Cussler, one of my favorite authors, was very involved in the recovery of the first sub to sink a ship, the Housatonic. There are many books out there about the Hunley and all are quite interesting. The Hunley played a small role in the Civil War but a large role in modern naval warfare.
Congrats to the team for the fantastic start to a new rowing season.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Hola, just came home a little while ago. We had fun and it was a great trip. The altitude had lots of effect on us. Started each morning with a 20k run, then ran most of the day playing games. Lost about 4 kgs.
The weather was beautiful and our hosts were so friendly and helpful. Think I will sleep for 2 days , so tired
Glad we had the chance to do this.
Thanks for all the good wishes and thoughts.

Thanks for all the good wishes and thoughts.
