Woohoo and hooyah! Anita has done it again! She's crossed the million meter milestone for the FOURTH time this season. Much tail wagging by pups Emil and Elke! Congratulations, Anita, on achieving a FOUR million meter rowing season. We wish you many, MANY more!!

Another episode...the language of sports...

I've seen some amazing Rockies baseball games - games that lasted hours and hours because they went into extra innings. Last night's game between the Rockies and the Diamondbacks (we call them the Snakes) was epic for different reasons: rain delays, pouring rain, temperatures in the low 40s F, leads gained and lost, and a bottom of the ninth, two-out walkoff home run by one of the team's oldest players to win the game some five hours after it had started. As Todd Helton's home run sailed out of the ball field, one of the announcers shouted "that ball's gone yard." And the bunny trail beckoned as I thought about the language of baseball and how many baseball metaphors are in our daily lives.

Think about it: we go to bat for our friends, we touch base, we drive home a point, we say that person is not playing ball, and when things suddenly change in a dramatic way (usually involving a bunch of runs scoring to even up the chances), we say "it's a whole new ball game!" Gone yard...it's a home run ball that has left the ballfield (or yard as they used to be called). When attending a ball game, I still like to be able to listen to the radio commentary while watching the game. The language is colorful, and who knows when you might learn a whole new metaphor.

Erging, and rowing, aren't to be left out of the metaphor mix either. Our team has some metaphors for different things in life, too. Some are numerical....we all know what 888 stands for..or 8888. We know our half moons, and our full moons, red giants, and supernovas. And now Ron has also given us Bazzercise to connote the uber events that Baz, and others, sign on for.

The really cool thing is that despite the attempts to make sports and those who participate in these human activities into a collection of numbers, it's the unpredictable human factors that make for some of the best drama and outcomes. It's not giving up hope of success even when it's the last inning. It's seeing an older athlete deliver a game winning home run. It's mostly believing that all things are possible. And sometimes, it's just the small steps towards improvement that we make that make it a great day.

Keep rowing - keep going after that next goal....not too late at all!

Meanwhile, bg is watching the clock. Wondering about the weather for the Boston Marathon tomorrow. Here's a re-posting of her message about following her progress:

The weather for the Boston Marathon is predicted to be very warm, and this has prompted the race committee to issue a weather advisory. Hydration is such a big issue. Be really really careful if you decide to run, bg.

We are now making the recommendation that if you are not highly fit or if you have any underlying medical conditions (for example-cardiac disease, pulmonary disease or any of a number of medical problems), you should NOT run this race.
•Inexperienced marathoners should not run.
•Those who have only trained in a cooler climate and who may not be acclimated (for at least the last 10 days) to warm weather running conditions should also consider not running.

For those very fit athletes who decide to run, you should take significant precautions:
•Run at a slower pace and maintain hydration.
•You should frequently take breaks by walking instead of running.
•This will not be a day to run a personal best. If you choose to run, run safely above all else. Speed can kill.
•Heat stroke is a serious issue and is related to intensity of running as well as the heat and humidity.

A few days ago, Jim posted an article about Pack Burro racing...and the Western Pack Burro Ass-ocation. The burro race calendar is approaching its opening day here pretty soon with the first race taking place in Georgetown, CO...a mere skip and a hop from Denver. If the stars align, I will have to check this out on May 26th and report back in from a location called Laughing Valley Ranch aka Santa's South Reindeer Ranch. The human may carry the burro, but the burro may not carry the human...just 33 lbs of mining gear. As you will note in the YouTube clip, the burros are fairly independent minded...gives a whole new meaning to hauling a**. Pretty sure that the lake you see at about 0:50 is Turquoise Lake near Leadville, btw.
