LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Later posting
Numbers have been captured, and stats posting will occur later today.
In the meantime....be on the watch ...we have some meter muli-millionaires about to pass some additional milestones! Anita, AJ and Robyn...
And...just noticed today that Bruce T has updated his profile. Another adventurer in the mix...and wowzer, his new goal is a great one..although the 2011 adventure view must have been sweet!

Re: 14 million lifetime meters!
I must say I had expectations of doing more rowing this year, but did get side-tracked with the other pursuits, but it still forms a core part of my daily fitness regime...Kona2 wrote:

Just looked at my log-book, and first metres logged at the beginning of the 2008/2009 season in May 2008, and was part of my recovery after a sky-diving mishap when I tore my hamstring clean off... All history, and all good now, and met some pretty awesome people in the journey thus far!

Wowzer, we've got some teammates who LOVE to celebrate Friday the 13th! We've got entries of 13,000 m...7,013 m...13,013 m (good one, Scott)...25,013 m...and 20,813 m and there are sure to be more! Once again the team surprises the astrogator with some more number fun!
Remiss in the postings, but will detail yesterday's stats in today's posting. Was certain that I would not do a good job with the numbers yesterday evening, so decided to delay posting until today. Lots of busy - and that's always a good thing. And besides, there's always more than one bunny trail that pops up in the day.
Leadville...and the Race Across The Sky...
We might be erging through or across or between galaxies on our ergs as we pursue our fitness goals, but there are those here on Planet Earth that live to Race Across The Sky. Baz mentioned that he'd been reading Born to Run, and asked about the Leadville Races. Leadville, CO is historic mining town - and this time it wasn't really about gold...it was silver. Like many of our Colorado mountain towns, the year round population is pretty small...probably less than 3500...but once summer comes, hooboy...the area is a magnet for athletes, history buffs, your average tourist, etc.
Race Across The Sky can be a run series or a bike series ... and both components have some similar (and fun) names like Silver Rush, Leadman and Leadwoman, Leadville 100. There are "camps" that prepare bikers and runners for some of the more challenging portions of the courses. These camps are like the prep event that Baz did in NZ prior to Coast to Coast I think. Both the run series and the bike series take place along just about the same routes from what I can tell. The elevation profile for the Leadville 100 (which is an out and back) looks like:
Note that the elevation is in the 10,000 ft to 12,000 ft category for these races. Some of the benefit of going to the camps surely has to be some high altitude training. The altitude can get the best of some pretty good athletes.
This is the route for a bike ride I've done a few times called the Courage Classic (raises money for Children's Hospital).
The ride is over three days, and starts in Leadville (first day is dark grey, second red, third light grey). It also ends in Leadville with a challenging climb up to Turquoise Lake - which is one that the Leadville 100 runners and bikers also circle in their routes. The second day is one that gives a good break from climbing with a tour of many of the ski resort towns....just to prepare individuals for day 3. The climb up to Turquoise Lake is a good one with some winding roads. And seems like every summer that I've been there...there's a bunch of lightning in the area as we're all trying to make our way up to the finish. Not much cover to get out of the way of the bolts, either. Yikes. Each of the times that I have ridden in the Courage, there have been several individuals who developed altitude sickness. It's a good idea to time arrival a few days before the events just for some quick acclimation to the altitude.
I believe that the races are all sold out for this year (they take place in July and August primarily). Leadville is about two hours from where I am by car...and a lot of hours by bike. Race Across The Sky....the bike series might be a good one for those who like to do trail rides. I like what some of the advertisements say - something about you'll be trying to catch your breath while the scenery tries to take it away....

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Speaking of Leadville, this is a race that is there also. I have watched it once in person. Have thought of trying it but haven't yet. You run with the burro who is loaded with what a miner would have packed in bygone days.
Also- Baz, I have read "Born to Run " many times. Try the chia seeds if you haven't yet. I like the drink mentioned in the book with chia seeds and also eating them raw. The pinole is really just corn, very good too. I think both work better than commercial gels and sports drinks. Plus great for the environment if you use your own bottles instead of buying more plastic.
