He doesn't drink or smoke, and centenarian Manohar Aich credits his longevity to a healthy lifestyle in which he minimizes stress and focuses on happiness.

Aich won the Mr. Universe international bodybuilding championship in 1952. He celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday surrounded by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Kolkata, an eastern city in India.

Standing just 4 feet, 11 inches tall, Aich earned the nickname "Pocket Hercules," the Associated Press said in a reportHis lifestyle and a simple diet of milk, fruits and vegetables along with rice, lentils and fish have kept him healthy, the bodybuilding trainer told the AP.

Aich turned to bodybuilding while he was imprisoned in the 1940s for opposing Britain's continued colonial rule of India. When he was released, he went on to compete as a bodybuilder, earning success in international competition that culminated with his taking the Mr. Universe title.

While his wife took care of their children, Aich traveled, competed and made a living. On his return to India, he trained future bodybuilding champions.

"I didn't become rich. There is not much money in bodybuilding," he told the Indian Express newspaper. "But there is respect. And for that, I wouldn't mind being a bodybuilder in my next life as well."

He has led a fulfilled life, but Aich regrets never having met his fellow Mr. Universe, former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's seen many of the Governator's films, though.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.

Post by pberge » March 19th, 2012, 2:36 pm

I recently joined the team in order to participate in the World Erg Challenge, but haven't had a chance to stop by and introduce myself.

My name is Paul, and I've been casually into rowing for a few years now. Up until now, I had been using the erg as a supplement to my weight training routines. I was more concerned with how much weight I could squat than with my general health. Between back and knee injuries, I came to realize that heavy weight training was doing my body more harm than good and I recently shifted my focus towards general fitness with a little more emphasis weight loss. Rowing has become my primary form of exercise. I have been doing 4-5 sessions per week, between 5k-10k each, since mid February and I'm feeling great so far.

I thought the WEC would be a good motivating tool and I have 13,000m logged so far, but plan on another 10k tonight.

I'm really looking forward to being part of the team for this and any future challenges.

Hi Paul...and welcome!

I know exactly where you are coming from on the weight training as one of my other passions is power lifting. I’ve found that lifting and rowing compliment each other, with the rowing providing a solid cardio work-out and also assisting recovery from lifting.

Enjoy, BBB

Welcome to the team Paul! I think you'll find that you have joined a great team, they're a great source of motivation and very supportive. As for your injuries I can definitely relate; rowing has been very beneficial to my rehab and general health.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 3.19.12

Post by Kona2 » March 20th, 2012, 2:45 pm

Welcome to new year round teammate, Chuck B! Here's wishing you many great rowing sessions and lots of camaraderie! Can we also interest you in signing on with our World Erg Challenge team? :D

Image Another episode...

Where we come from is important. Not just geographically, but culturally, experientially. I see the team profiles most days as I peruse the meter numbers we've generated as a team. Sometimes, when I'm in a hurry, I don't catch all the gems that teammates are writing in their team profiles right away (sometimes, when I'm in a hurry I temporarily lose 60 of Baz's meters, too). New Zealander Bernie gives us a monthly quote. Ronnie gave us Alligator Pond. These all lead to bunny trails that tell a bit about where we come from and some of the things that are important to us. Paul gave us a great introduction...and did you notice his signature line "the tattooed engineer." We have a lot of engineers...what kind of engineer? (I know...tattooed :D ). Civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, process, train...but I digress. Today's bunny trail was initiated by Dana.

Our new teammate Dana N shares a quote from Buckaroo Banzai in her team profile...and before I knew it, I was headed down another bunny trail of the mind. Buckaroo The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension is a very fun movie - especially if you are tuned in to subtle humor (will appeal to those who like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Our hero, Buckaroo, is a rock star, a surgeon, a superhero (and probably a couple of other things). One of his amazing feats is to pilot his jet car through a Texas mountainside...by virtue of the benefit of the eighth dimension which he describes (according to Scott Tate) as a "a simultaneous plane of existence with our own," insisting that he was never actually inside that mountain in Texas, but instead moving through the space the mountain occupied. The director of Buckaroo says fans of the movie aren't just geeks; they're an ecclectic group of people. And, while he can't predict whether you'll like the film or not, he does say : 'Come on board. It's a big fantasy world. Have fun with it.' It's like joining Captain Midnight's club, you can get a decoder ring!" To which Minnie would say, who are these people and what are they doing with our team's decoder ring?! (Thanks to D. Konow's post on TG Daily) Rowing is good for many, many things...and being a part of the Luna-Tic team is good for many of the others. :D
