When in our Rowing Universe, most of us use pseudonyms or gamer identifications or simply shortened versions of our names. All in good fun - although I must admit that I am much more K2 than I am Jan. Sometimes, you just get a Luna-Tic name like Minnie (Chris never chose that name) and no one really remembers how it started, but it stayed. "Restless" was a mystery for a posting or two...wasn't sure if it was Peter G or Rebecca. We've had several new teammates join (or rejoin) us in the last week Helena, Stephen, Karen G, Paul, Keith. And so it is that when drawing my mental picture of connect the items in column A with the items in column B...I found that I couldn't finish the "matching test."

I had my math kids calculate it out this morning - they had a ball! As of this morning, there were 5043 people in the challenge and 82 of them are Luna-Tics. They came up with a 33.6% probability that at least one more Luna-Tic would win this month!
VERY cool ! What a great way to have some fun with numbers! Would be spectacular if the second Lunie to win was YOU!!

Image Madness!! Day 7 or 8 of 31......

Image ImageImage teammates in the Challenge

...and what's even better is that we have over 100 people who are rowing when we count those who are contributing to their meters at less than 5K a day (the rowing is more important than the meter total).

Yes, contestants, welcome back to another day of our version of Stayin' Alive in the March Madness Challenge! Thanks to Nancy and the math contingent for calculating the probability that another Luna-Tic will join the list of March Madness Challenge winners. Today's numbers were captured at the usual time...and wowzer, this team has been rowing some increasing numbers of daily meters. We'd been hovering around the daily meter total of 480-500K for a short while, and for the last couple of days....we've hit 700K. Amazing...and thanks to all for making it so.

Image Meanwhile, the OTHER March Madness is getting closer. The NCAA Women's Final Four is being held in Denver this year - and that's kind of like landing the Super Bowl for your city. Friends working with event planning on this sent out a request for volunteers and I am going to help out for a couple of days. One of the events involves something like 1500 kids dribbling basketballs down the street towards the venue...hope to get a picture of that. Can you imagine?!

Season meters as of 313/366 = 168,500,539 m

Total meters on the day = 719,441 m

:D It occurred to me after I posted a couple times that it may be hard to match who I was exactly, especially at first. At this point I try to add my *real* name to help people out :)

Also congrats to Sunny for the one million meters!

Marvellous kids! Which grade? (If I even hear "a train left Chicago going west at 60 mpm" ... I retreat into a fugue state.) Baton Rouge was the first place I lived in the US, coming directly from London. Once I learned the language, I loved it!

It's my one section of AP Statistics, which is mixed 10th/11th/12th. They had a great time - I didn't give them any information other than I wanted to know the probability - they had to go look up the numbers online and figure out how they wanted to calculate it (there are actually several ways to do it, all of which arrive at the same probability).

Yes, Baton Rouge (and the south in general) has their own version of English. :) I learned the other day on RowPro that not everyone knows that pokey = slow. (I might be pokey, but I got to 100,000 meters today!)

Thanks for helping me out with this, Ed. I don't see you (or anyone named Ed) on the roster for the year round team or the Challenge team, but this is easy to fix. If you will go into your online logbook and scroll across to teams, you can join the Challenge team (there's a link about halfway down the page that you can choose the team). If you would like to be on the year round team (and we hope that you will be!), while in your logbook go to profile, click on edit profile, then scroll down to where it says affiliations. That's where you can sign on.

Surprisingly, there is another Ed Church (or maybe it is you from a previous residence) who lives in Mobile, AL. Pocatello is a great barley growing place....maybe hops, too. :D

Stayin' alive....stayin' alive....still had 82 Luna-Tic Challengers on the roster earlier this morning! And of course we're all waiting to see if the lucky horseshoe finds its way to another Luna-Tic for the prize drawing... :D

Also was hoping to see Ed's name on the roster, but alas we are still Ed-less. Rats. We do, however, have another returning teammate -- welcome back to Nancy Flag! Always great to see returning teammates on the roster.

Another Episode...Bunny Trails of the Mind

Post by Kona2 » March 8th, 2012, 5:02 pm

Image Another episode...

Since I'm doing a mega-bike ride later this year, I've started getting out on the bike here and there - as long as temperatures are above 30F. There are limits after all! Thinking about how to do more of my errands by bike made me take a long look at the bike trailer. Many of you may have also had the experience of riding your bike and towing something like a Burley trailer with your kid in it, then having to come to a quick stop, and seeing the trailer (and child) coming up beside you instead of staying behind the bike....because most bike trailers don't have brakes. It was somewhat unsettling, although that particular child loves roller coasters and is unfazed. Still, I traded the trailer in for one that had a brake...child got too big for the trailer...and trailer stayed in the garage.

The trailer and bike came out of the garage when we got the K9 Kona. She was/is a wild child dog with somewhat boundless energy (although she has slowed a bit, she can still catch rabbits). I wanted to get more bike training time, but didn't want to leave K9 Kona all day while she was still in adolescent dog destructo mode. So I decided to bike train with K9 Kona in the trailer. I'd ride for a couple of hours, then let K9 Kona get out and run. This meant that Kona had to be harnessed, and hooked into the trailer...in case of bunny alerts.

Image Kona ... not happy with the harness
Image

Image

This worked pretty well as long as we rode on bike paths. That is, until we took the path next to The Horses. Didn't know there'd be horses. A quick turn brought us squarely behind them and K9 Kona, in her haste to get clear of anything that big, flipped the cart over. Dog, bike, trailer and me...all in a pile. We didn't ride there again...in fact, it took awhile to get K9 Kona back in the trailer. Still, now that she is 8 years older....I think she might like the bike trailer adventures.

Image Happy trails...however you get there.

Hi All,

Long time no post... well not since the 24th Feb and about 10 pages of "forum life" ago.
Suffice to say I haven't had time to read them all, so I offer my generic congrats to all who achieved milestones, and a belated welcome to those who have joined in the interim!
Bazz will no doubt have kept you across some of the weather we have had here in Sydney - as we transitioned into Autumn/ Fall it was noted by a friend that the majority of Sydney-siders were not so much sun-tanned as they were rusty!
Trying valiantly to keep up the 10k days to satisfy the competitor within, and still have a few "lay-days" up my sleeve (which is just as well with that annoyance called "work" continually getting in the way of important things... )

Got to say I love the pics of K9 Kona going for a ride Jan - I am guessing she would fill the trailer a bit more with that extra age under her collar? B)

Hope all is well in the Luna-tic world,
Dave
