Likewise when I used to erg at a gym - no one ever used these. No lines, no waiting. One in a while someone might try it for a few minutes and row at a excruciatingly slow pace, only to hop back on a stairmaster or eliptical rider or stationary bike and read an old tattered issue of Glamour Magazine while "working out".

The Y reached capacity on Saturday. No visible line, but we had a few minutes of all 5 or 6 ergs in use. That's a first. I normally row alone with the odd wieght lifter doing a few hunderd meters like an idiot. The last month+ I've seen folks with good form doing long rows. I assumed it was folks getting ready for the Crash-Bs. I'll find out on Saturday.

A long Saturday and short Monday. I like it so much I'll be doing again this weekend. If only the gym didn't have a 45 minute limit on the erg. I'd have had a PB HM.
When I'm at a gym with a time limit sign, I use the Direct Approach: I first ask the fellow at the desk if it's alright to do a longer row (like that HM), assuring him that if anyone needs the erg I will move aside. Then I ask people who start hanging around if they need the erg, because I could defer to them. It's VERY rare that I need to give up my erg...

CONLEJM wrote:That's awesome Glen and Mark! Taking some rest did you guys some good. it has helped me a lot also. I'm setting new PBs a couple/few times a week since I started taking days off again.

I have never done a 2K before yesterday; never saw them as being a productive part of my fitness regimen (or any row < 5K for that matter). But I tried one yesterday for the first time and did it in 6:54.3, or a 1:43.5/500 pace. I am pretty happy with that for a first try. But I like the longer rows much better.
Jim, if you haven't figured it out, anything sub-7 is very, very good. And if you haven't figured it out, endurance levels are more indicative of 2K scores than speed levels, as 80-85% of the energy used during a 2K is from the aerobic system. So, the longer rows you like have helped you achieve a very good 2K time!
A reminder: Your improvement is better to track using watts than time, since a 5% improvement in wattage might only show up as a couple seconds improvement. So, your real improvement is 5%, not 2%, as your improved energy output actually causes the flywheel to have to fight more drag.
I personally consider EVERY distance as a productive part of my fitness regimen...

I can row as slow as I want at home :)
I like numbers, but (for the record) dislike math. Let's see what Excel can do for me:
I rowed my first 10k on August 12, 2011. I've rowed 40 more since. My average pace is 2:46/500m. My PB is exactly 2:25.0/500m. Technically I am a few minutes over 45 minutes at the Y each session. I hope I don't get in trouble.

I see... so people hang around you at the gym a lot? I don't seem to have that problem. Maybe I need to lose a few pounds.

Thanks for the advice Cap'n Izzy!

I think the real reason I don't like rows < 5K is simply because they require way too much EFFORT if you are trying to place up at the 90th percentile! Way more effort than even doing a half-marathon at the 90th percentile. At least that's the way it feels for me. The short rows nearly kill me, and I mean that literally! Must be a power vs endurance thing.

So far all my rows 5k or longer (5k, 6k, 10k, 21k, 30min, 60min) are up at the 90th percentile or above. My one and only 2k is at the 89th percentile. And my one and only 500m is at the 80th percentile; I tried that one a couple of months ago and haven't revisited it since. I've not tried a 1k or a 4min yet.

I'm going to start treating my yard work like a trip to the gym--starting with some stretching and a good warm up. This is the second time in less than a year that I have injured myself in the yard. I hurt my lower back while pruning last Saturday. Maybe I shouldn't have got on the ladder to cut some hard-to-reach branches. During the summer, I got an elbow injury from shoveling. It's a jungle out there!

The good news is that I was able to get back on the erg for the first time this week for a short, safe and lethargic row.
