Some of you know that I am a big fan of Cycle Oregon. It's September 8 - 15. I think it is one of the best bike rides in America - for you and 2199 of your newest friends (and it supports rural communities by giving them grants to do things like install a new running track at a high school). Like Ride the Rockies, the route through the state changes from year to year. The route is announced at a kickoff party, and last night was the kickoff. All the registration was online this year, and to give everyone a pretty equal chance to get online, the registration opened at 9 PM PST last night. It was sold out by 9:15 PM....fifteen minutes. I was online at 9:00:15...and successfully registered...but I am amazed at how quickly this sold out. If you're a person who likes to crosstrain with a bicycle, this is a wonderful ride to put on your "to do" list...and it looks like a lot of people think so. And I'll get back just in time for the Fall Team Challenge!

Season meters as of 285/366 = 150,699,293 m

This is a great race but only held when ice is solid, check it out.

HINDELOOPEN, Netherlands (AP) — Hundreds of skaters have taken to the route of the Netherlands' legendary Eleven Cities Tour skating marathon the day after organizers ruled the ice is to thin for it to go ahead.

Thomas Mogendorff has a ticket for the race and is refusing to give up hope it might still happen.

He says he "won't tear up the ticket until all the ice has thawed."

Skaters glided peacefully Thursday through the flat, frozen landscape, their skates making a metallic click on the ice.

Wednesday's announcement to forego the 125-mile (200-kilometer) "Elfstedentocht" came after chiefs of the 22 separate stretches of canals, rivers and lakes that make up the tour ruled the ice was too dangerous.

Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on the news as well. As the Germans describe it, it brings The Netherlands to a state of National Orgasm when it happens. It's been a pretty long time since the last one too.

Hopefully the next cold front will come soon and prevent too much thawing while strengthening the ice a bit more. One more week will probably do it is my guess. I only see weather forecasts until Tuesday, but come Monday the daily average is above freezing :(. Hopefully that will only last a couple of days until it gets cooler again. One can hope :).

Note: I'm not one for ice skating. I did it a couple of times when I was a kid, but I'm not one for being out in freezing temperatures. I just like the sights and the state of euphoria the country gets in when there's enough ice to skate on.

Thanks for the posting - I'd never heard of this skating marathon. Let's hope that this race can indeed be held if the climate cooperates to get to the required ice thickness.

Image The whole team would be out skating!

And, while not pictured above, there are adaptive skates so that all can participate. :D

Speight's Coast to Coast

Post by Kona2 » February 10th, 2012, 10:44 am

Here's a link to some photos from yesterday's Day 1 of the Speight's Coast to Coast multisport event that Baz is participating in. Keep sending positive thoughts towards New Zealand - looks like some long days for these competitors, and that sloshing through the rivers will definitely take it out of you! I am sure that he is glad to have the run portion behind him.

The support crews are so critical in these events. The competitors have to be met at just the right location by their support crews bringing bikes, etc. Still, I'll bet those brief transition moments are really uplifting to those competing - nothing like having friends and family cheer you on.

And here's the SPOT tracker showing where Baz is:
