5seat... glad to hear someone else out there remembers the gamut ergs of old. Those things were great, even if they were tanks! or maybe it's just that I look back that fondly of my novice year ('85).

anyone ever used one of these http://www.lehigh.edu/~jawf/reduced%20erg.jpg I had never seen one until today, posted on row2k. I can't quite figure out how it would work. Seems like something is missing from the handle part or something. Where does the resistance come from?

Deb

Yeah, I liked the old gamut machine. Ours was painted blue, I think, baby blue. It was in this tiny winy hot little room on the second floor of the gymn. Only the machine, with its victim seated on it, and the coach fit in there. I can't remember how it worked very well. It had weights hanging in a little pot on a chain, or something like that. I'd love to see a picture of one.

I can't tell from the photo you posted of that other machine how it works at all. I don't see any resistnace thing on it either. Maybe something's missing from it.

Where did you go to college? I would have been class of '82 at UMass Amherst but I only rowed in '78='79.

Carla...
I was at Northeastern in '85 with the Gamut.... we had 2 of them down in the basement with the tanks, which were a much more fun way to pass the winter days. Ours were gamut blue too. For the rest of you that are wondering what the heck we're talking about... the gamut ert was this big bohemeth of a machine that you could configure to either port or starboard. It was steel with an actual boat seat and tracks, and like Carla said, a place to put weights that would drag on a brake on a big flywheel. The more weight, the heavier the load. It counted the number of rotations of the wheel, and there was a gauge with a needle, if I remember correctly that would show you how fast you were going.... it couldn't have been rpm that it showed (that would have been too advanced), I don't know what it was. The only information you got reatime was that, and the only info at the end of the piece the number of revolutions.

We had a bunch of I guess would be the model A's too (old bicycle wheel C2's) that measured miles I believe.... back in the day of the 5 mile (~2500 m equivalent erg test). I ended up at WPI for the end of the collegiate rowing. I'm in Boulder now.. and actually am going to meet Kathi when she gets on the water for the first time this spring. Where are you now?

Deb

Deb,

I'm in Bradford, MA. One of my sons is a freshman at WPI and the other has been accepted there and will probably be a freshman there next year. Neither of them is interested in rowing at all, sad to say.

I remember that the Gamut erg gave you a score at the end but I had no idea it was the number of revolutions. And you were given weights on the thing that were some percentage of your body weight.

It's the end of the season and everyone's last chance to put their best times out there!

New hour pb today, 14366, increase of about 180 meters. This time around I didn't stick to 10MPS but just rowed however if felt easy and it was really a matter of trading rate for pace. A higher erg score, but probably not as good a row as the previous one.

Good for you, Shannon, we've all got to make hay while the sun shines, right? Those are good improvements on your previous times.

Have you signed up for Nonathlon yet? It's a lot of fun, and earning points for the different events is really motivational. In case you haven't heard about it: www.matrix.uk.net/nonathlon If that doesn't work, just do a google search for "nonathlon" and it will come up.

Oh, thanks so much for writing about the Nonathlon! I must admit I have been so curious about this. I had tried searching the C2 site, but never found anything. Now that I have the address, I'll check it out!

Shannon

Where is everyone? OK. I did a 30K this weekend to see how it would feel. I have found that I am faster on my short rows in the days following the long rows. I thought I'd try a 2K tonight to see how I did and I went sub 9 minutes. Woo Hoo!!! My long term 2K goal is to be sub 8 but this was my first try below 9 minutes. It hurt but it felt good.
Hope all is well out there in our quiet duck pond.....

back with a vengeance, too!
Probably by the time you are "back" I'll be lightening up on rowing for the summer. It gets too hot and my bike is calling me.

How is your rehab coming? Are you till doing swimming? I kind of miss swimming. I know it is really hard to come back after injuries, but I know you well enough to know you are doing everything necessary to be in top form probably by fall, and then I'll be playing catch up!! Can't wait to see you posting times that I will feel compelled to chase! you go girl!

I have an new PB to report!

5,000 metres 23:46.6

That obliterated my previous best by one minute and forty-five seconds

I was surfing around on the forums and read this post that said that your pace for 5,000 m. should be about 5 seconds slower than your pace for 2,000 m. I thought I would give it a try since I was always a bit afraid to go for it on a 5,000, thinking I would die before the end. It worked!

When I put it in the rankings it was at 52% which is also a PB for me! I can remeber not that long ago, thinking that getting to 75% would be a minor miracle.

Shannon

New PB for me (sort've). I've now been rowing for 90 days I figure if I keep doing this in 90 day segments...I'll eventually have a whole year under my belt (and maybe then I'll have some actual time PBs to report (c; )

Also, saw WPI mentioned earlier. I'm a senior there...and I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen WPI mentioned...anywhere (c:

Hello All!
I'm new to the forum, but I've enjoyed reading all your posts! I'm in Alabama, getting ready for my first on the water regatta of the season in a couple of weeks. We'll see how that goes! Anyway, I have a new PB tonight - 4:20 for 1k. Thought I was gonna die, but I didn't, so I guess I'll have to keep it up and try again!
