Good morning, teammates! We made it to 9,094,807 meters last night, or 5,648 miles. Good progress, but can we keep it up? We have 822 miles to go to Miami, or 164 miles per day.

Image

We made it to Hattiesburg yesterday, rowing for a while on the placid Bowie River, near highway 49.

Image

We'll leave Louisiana behind today, briefly visit Alabama, and then we're in Florida!!! But it's a big state and a long way to the Miami coast. Can we make it past Pensacola (161 miles) today???

Row strong, team!!

Now there is the voice of experience; and ain't it the truth. Perhaps it deserves sympathy, but I can't for the life of me understand the evolutionary significance of this trait. Presumably, men with an infallible sense of direction should have survived and wiped out all those without; clearly, that didn't happen. So, what gives? An ad hoc, male version of PMS, 24/7, 365? :P

The litmus test is yes, I realize it was a joke, and I appreciated it, but if I had done it...ooo la la! I had the chance once, but I didn't dare! And FYI, my burst this morning was to get further ahead of the man in 4th, who has been leaping up the ladder in leaps and bounds, but under the radar of non-affiliation so his numbers don't show up here daily. Methinks he's after 2nd place; maybe someone should warn him about the slave-driving Thor (for my sake; otherwise, I'll never keep ahead). :D

You nailed it! I worked with an engineer from the Cambridge (UK) rowing team who critiqued my form and it's served me well (which I verified by watching the 'common flaws' video posted by Bob, just in case--phew! I'm safe); as for venturing out onto open waters in a skull, I have enough trouble keeping in my lane doing the backstroke.

But I was intrigued by the possibility of simulating water rowing, and looked on the C2 site for gyms that have this equipment so I could try it out: I can't remember if any of them were close enough to me, because then I had the brilliant-at-the-time idea of trying to row while sitting on my 'balance fit' air cushion. As a intermittent seakayak-er, I can state that it was exactly like being in a very tippy boat on choppy water, which is okay in a kayak where you sit still for the main part, with your shoulders doing the work; on this contraption, not only did I nearly fall off my no longer stable erg, it took all my concentration to avoid wrenching my back. I am no longer curious.

If you had the chance, you should have done it-I would have enjoyed the laugh! :P
Interesting thing about watching my technique more-I'm in worse shape than I thought! My main crime in my technique has been over-reaching on the catch. Now that I am watching my technique, I am feeling a bit sore-proof of bad form. Means I am using more of a pendulum type force than an effective drive. Also I did 23K or so yesterday-I can't go as far rowing properly-damn. But, it's good-I will get in better shape and be better prepared to get on the water in spring. Thanks for the video-it's a great help. Still going to break 600k (I hope). I am stoked about doubling my goal. With my back problems, I really thought that was all I could do-but it appears I was way wrong-what a nice feeling-less back pain :D .

It was a good review for me to check that video. btw I have seen a few different ones and that is one of the best ones "I've" seen. Not only shows proper form but the comparison at looking at bad form was really good.

Everyone would benefit from looking through the many links on THIS site. Concept 2 went through a lot of trouble to put together an awesome site. This forum is such a small part of the wonderful effort their team has put in to help all of us and there are many great helps in technique, training, intervals, cross-training....................................

Wow, team!! Yesterday (Friday) was one of out top days ever!! We ended at 9,531,511 meters, or 5,919 miles!!! Something in the sweet tea we've been drinking down here must sure stoke the fires!! Nice work!!

Image

As we rolled through Mobile, AL, we took a quick tour of a seriously large boat, the USS Alabama, now permanently berthed at the Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile Bay. We briefly considered making off with her, but our oars didn't reach the water from the decks...

Image

After our break we quickly took back up our oars and streaked across the Florida panhandle. Nice and flat, and a lot of water around. From Chipley we head over through Tallahassee and to Lake City, then turn south towards Orlando. Keep in your seats though, cuz there be gators in them thar waters!!!

I'm not seeking any particular place on a list. 3 years ago I tipped the scales over 300#'s (5'-11.5") so just seeing my name on a list having anything to do with physical fitness is a victory :D I'll do 550 and call it good, I need to hop out of the boat one day early to attend my nephews wedding in AZ (seems like we were just there :) ).

Lisa, I'd like to join the year long affiliation. Thanks for your hard work and enthusiasm! BTW that 58*** was over 2 days.

All of what I wrote was by way of saying you're doing an incredible job, and then reading what you wrote, I'm really impressed. I would insert an applause smiley if I knew how to import them (anyone? Another team has them.)

Welcome to the year-long group: you sign up in the profile section of your logbook, at the bottom of the page I think, and then choose TimbukTOO from the selection.

Well done!
