1 Hour Record?

What gives this record was set on a Dynamic Rower. No body mass movement etc. Did the NZ organisers really think this was a valid attempt?

Get the slides out guys lets start breaking some records.

Given that a C2 representative was there to validate it it looks like they are recognizing it. Furthermore all reports are that the dynamic erg does not give faster times. If anything it produces slower ones. There is a long discussion of why that might be on the rec.sports.rowing news group. Dynamic ergs/slides only seem to help for very short distances where one can rate higher.

Ahh but the laws of physics and common sense say different. As far as I know there has been no study to specifically document the fact that there is no advantage.

It is extremely likely that athletes without good technical ability would be less likely to benefit especially over longer distances however an athlete with exceptional technique is unlikely to be effected by that limitation.

The raw fact is that on any sort of dynamic rig you can output more power at the PM for less power put in. The rating higher phenomenon is merely an indirect result of this core principal and certainly not the only means to benefit from a dynamic set up.

I agree that it is counter intuitive, but it it just doesn't seem that the dynamic erg or slides are any faster the the static for any distance much over 500m. At first glance it seems that it should be faster, and I don't claim to understand why it is not. Haven't noticed my times being any better on slides then on the static and I do have well above average sculling technique (and a Ph.D in physics).

When rowing at a constant power output, efficiency was lower for male
