What's obvious to me is that there are as many different goals as there are people (probably even more goals than there are people). I spent way more than 2 hours on the erg on Saturday, but it was because (a) my family was absent, (b) I had the erg in front of the TV and had nothing pressing to do, and (c) I was curious as to just how far I could go.

I seem to always want to establish some personal limits for all of my activities. Some of these limits come from years of experience (like skiing where I know precisely where the danger zone starts). Some come from an abundance of caution (like paragliding where the penalty for stupidity can be rather high). For the erging case it was pretty easy to safely find the limit...just sit there and go at it until it starts to hurt somewhere. Stop at that point and pay attention to what the body is saying. I've been bumping my rows up and up, and this weekend found the limit...or at least the limiting factor (tendon at the back of the knee). No problem, just gotta relax a bit and it will be fine, but now I know for certain that a 20k row is absolutely no problem, a 30k row is getting aggressive, and 40k is pushing it and should only be done very carefully.

It also means that I'm not even going to try to catch Tyrone! :D

Lastly, I discovered that "The Mountain", starring Robert Wagner and Spencer Tracy is a really cheesy movie that makes movies like "K2", "Vertical Limit", and "Cliffhanger" look like accurate portrayals of climbing..

I have read through a bunch of the training forum and the different intervals and even tried a few. I find that the Challenge causes me to look for distance above and beyond everything else. I'll have to see how I feel about Challenges after this one is over. I still feel that I may feel differently if I had a Concept 2 sitting at home in front of a large screen TV.

I don't think that I have read about any competitive water rowers here (or did I miss it)

I think you are very talented. That table is beautiful!

The only other blacksmith I've ever met made for me a bottle opener; primitive compared to your hummingbird, to say the least.

Smitty, your work is stunning!! :D

Jamie rows on water, but not sure if he competes. However, our intrepid Cap'n does compete in regattas (on the erg), and perhaps others do too. Not me!! B)

The table is stunning; you should be very proud of it. Excuse my ignorance, but do you do the woodwork as well, or do you collaborate with other artisans? I hope you do get on with the marketing; time passes so quickly and when you know what else you can do, life is wasted on the $10/hr jobs you mentioned a few posts ago. Necessary, at times, yes; but they sap your energy and optimism for creative endeavours (thus speaks the voice of experience).

Thank you very much for sharing your work. If you do get a photo gallery together, please send me a PM if you feel awkward about posting it generally.

Heather.

It may be time to inform that "high-profile" client (and others in your Rolodex) that you have chiseled out a bit of time to make unique items for them or their friends & acquaintances for the right price...

Hi All,
Thanks for the kind words. I do wood also, but that table was a joint effort with a friend. Even though most of my clients are "high end", the economy has been devastating. I used to do a bunch of work on Long Island (Hamptons etc). Big gates,100 ft rails etc, well, now with the economic thing a lot of the wealthy don't want to appear ostentatious and have cut out the fancy stuff which has really put a hurting on a lot of people in my line all over the country. Hopefully I can hang in there till things start to improve.
As for "giving Heather a break", it's more giving Mark a break  . I am tired-I've really put a lot of effort out-now I'm going to do a bit less and recover a bit.
Cheers,
Mark

I forgot to add- I'm REALLY impressed with the efforts put forth by our team. Solitary rowing is such a hard thing to do, day after day-and the time commitment also. Totally awesome team results!
And it's nice to see Mr Bestor's #'s put where they belong-in the trash   .

Hi Team,

I'm backkkkkkkkkkkkk..... :D

Found a gym, starting rowing and will try to go each day till the end of January! I'll do my best to help out! Better late than never.

Congrats Lisa, I see you are the weekly winner! Yea, couldn't happen to a better person.

But let's see while I was gone from the boat, I did not miss a Patriots game and am thrilled my team scratched it's way to the superbowl!

Go Patriots!

Red solo cup I fill you up, lets have a party! :P

I thought you made horseshoes until I read this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacksmith

Really great stuff there and I'm glad you posted it.

I was reading my last post and it might have come across a little................ I;m glad that there were some replys as to the reason for some training so hard. (Training to run long distances, skiing, ....) I haven't seen much in the discussions here and just figured most were just trying to get and stay fit with no specific sports goals in mind. Seeing so many get caught up in the "big dog" mentality can make you wonder. I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone here. I enjoy reading the posts and seeing everyone stay motivated to row. In the back of my mind,I remember all the times in the past where I may have hit it hard only to burn our too soon and end up on the sidelines doing nothing. Maybe I just hate to see that potential happening to anyone here (or worse an injury). So don't mind me (so much) but mind what you are doing and use your head is all. :D :D :D

Try Aussie Rules Football. After watching a match at the MCG I'm firmly convinced that NOBODY actually knows the rules, least of all the guys in the white shirts...but the pre/post game parties are well worth it!

Gosh, what a blast from the past. For some reason ARF used to be televised here in NH when I was a teen. It may still be, I have not seen it though. I used to love watching it, though I couldn't really understand the rules at the time. In retrospect, I think it is rugby? Tyrone?
