My training in New Zealand was an eye opener! :o

Unfortunately the weather in the Alpine region where we were training turned bad about the day I arrived, and continued that way until I left. I was able to get the two paddles in, but we weren’t able to do the full river and we had to miss the gorge rapid section both days as the wind was gusting 100 kilometres per hour through the gorge, and the river was very high due to rain. For those familiar with river flows it went from 70 cumecs (cubic metres per second) in the gorge to about 280 on the days we were paddling, between the Friday and the Saturday.

We did the river in two stages both days, the first 15 kilometres, and the last 20 kilometres, transporting the kayaks by car in between. Where we put in on the last section is close to the end of the 25 kilometre gorge section, and the kayaks were almost blowing away when we put them on the river bank. I recall at one stage I was doing around 3 minute kilometres on this section.

And for much the same reasons we had to cancel the run as it was raining / snowing at the top of the mountain run section and the river was impossible to cross in the lower sections. In fact on Friday two separate groups were evacuated out by helicopter, but mind you they shouldn’t have even attempted the run in the conditions that were present and were suffering advanced stages of hyperthermia when rescued.... Welcome to New Zealand!

It wasn’t a total loss as I learnt a lot. For someone who grew up in North Queensland where it never snows (30 degrees everyday), it was a real pointer that Alpine regions deserve a great deal of respect. Fortunately the people I was training with have safety and risk assessment at forefront of mind. I’m sure most of my North American friends will be familiar with weather vagrancies like this...

It was good to see sections of the bike ride I will be doing, the transition for the run, and the kayaking that we did was a lot of fun, even managed to stay dry in the rapid sections that we did. :D

And apologies if you tried to follow on Spot tracking, I forgot to take it!!

We also had two reasonable sized earth tremors while I was there. For those who aren''t familiar tragically around 181 people died in Christchurch in February last year due to a large quake.

And on the challenge rowing, still catching up, but from what I can see it has been a great effort by all! I’ll get a few days of rowing in, then the family is off for a week camping in the Australian Alps region (nothing like New Zealand!)

Cheers, BBB

Congratulations Tony! 9M is a lot of kilometers. More than enough to travel from pretty much anywhere in the US to Europe and go for a good tour of the region.

Welcome back Bazzy. Sorry to hear that it didn't go exactly as planned, but it sounds like you had a good learning experience regardless.

And Ron, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your sister.

I ended up buying a mat for my rowing machine yesterday, but as the mat is only 7' long, it's too short. Oops. Thankfully the place ended up charging me the wrong amount for it and now I have a 7' rubber mat I have to find a good use for. But for $3.28 it was a pretty good deal. I doubt they'll make the same screw-up twice so the 8 footer I'm planning on picking up this afternoon is most likely going to cost me a bit more. Not sure if I'm going to put the 7' mat in the garage or if I should just cut it in half and put it under the exercise bike instead. Or donate it to a coworker if I can find one that could use it.

I also invested in some actual workout clothes. Got some new shorts and shirts. Not that it'll make me go faster, but I'm looking forward to breaking in my new clothes. :) Didn't get to row yesterday, but planning to do a 10k tonight (right after dinner... oops).
Wim (attempting to get back into rowing shape).

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 1.16.12

Post by Kona2 » January 17th, 2012, 6:03 pm

Felt like we were playing power ball yesterday with all those million meter celebrations!

Great update from Baz on the NZ training trip - evacuating groups by helicopter....yikes! Wonder if the people who were rescued had to pitch in some $$$ for the rescue? It's always tough to get reimbursed for rescue operations when the people rescued didn't agree to the cost up front. When we ride bikes in the mountain passes in summer, we carry space blankets because snow and sudden temperature drops can happen so unexpectedly. Whoa...there's a bunny trail in progress here... Sorry the trip didn't come out quite as planned, Baz, but I'll bet you extracted a lot of knowledge regardless.

Season meters as of 263/366 = 135,490,764 m

Total meters on the day = 979,900 m

Oars in space (participation) = 42 percent!

Thanks, Kona2. I've been off the board for a few weeks. We've experienced a downturn in business income that has had me totally occupied and preoccupied. But every morning at 5am I go down to the garage for my crossfit/rowing workout for the day. And after I'm done I think, "Maybe we'll be ok". "Maybe we might just make it after all." And I feel better and ready for whatever comes. Our team is doing so great in the challenge. I see everyone is rowing really, really well. I'm so glad to be a part of it.
