We've made it into the badlands of Nevada, team!! Last night we had achieved 4,580,733 meters, or 2,845 miles! That put is into the little town of Carlin, Nevada for the night.

Image

Not much to do there, so we were early to bed and out at dawn, with the rising desert sun in our eyes as we row on west to the City by the Bay.... Next stop, Reno?

OK, gang, if we REALLY want to come together as a team for this challenge, here is the group to emulate! :D
WorldRowing.com wrote:Ten of Denmark's best rowers smashed the World Record for a team going 24 hours non-stop on the indoor rowing machine over the 24 - 25 November. They set the new World Record by completing a massive 512,649 metres at Copenhagen’s central train station watched over by commuters.

This record is 35,194 metres more than the previous record. The distance also gives the Danish 10 the World Record for big teams. The big team record was set in 1998 when 71 rowers did nearly 498,000 metres.

Amongst the 10 rowers wad the former lightweight men’s double sculls World Champions, current World Best Time holders and Beijing 2008 Olympic bronze medallists Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist. Three of the 2009 World Championship silver medallists in the lightweight men’s four, Christian Place Pedersen, Jens Vilhelmsen and Kasper Winther Jørgensen were also on the team and Thomas Morsing Larsen who competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the men's pair. More notable was that the team smashed the record without the help of the best lightweight erg rower in the world, Henrik Stephansen. Stephansen is the only lightweight rower to go below six minutes over the 2000m distance.

The Danish team's tactics was to switch rowers every 15 seconds and to row as hard as possible in those 15 seconds. After two hours of rowing, two athletes had a 15 minute break. This made it 45 minutes rowing followed by a 15 minutes break for each rower in the space of an hour.

The rowers took quick power naps during their break and sustained themselves with energy bars and gels, bananas, white bread with honey and marmalade and lots of coffee.

The Danish rowers set a hard pace of almost 1:20/500 metres in the first few hours. They were well ahead of the previous World Record and kept opening up a gap. They passed the old World Record with more than an hour and 40 minutes to go while Rasmussen was on his turn.

The Danish team had a goal from early on: to also beat the World Record for big teams and with 45 minutes left, the Danish rowers achieved this. Then it was only a matter of how far beyond the magic 500 km the team would go. Big Thomas Morsing Larsen powered by the 500k mark with 35 minutes remaining.

"We are the first team ever to break 500 kilometres, and we beat the old record by over 35k so this is really a fantastic achievement. Our tactic was to go hard out and the first 12 hours our pace was 1:21.9/500 metres, so we survived on this big lead over the last 4 to 5 hours where we all really suffered a lot to keep ourselves going," says Kasper Winther Jørgensen.
Here's a video of the last minute of their effort.

"THAT" wasn't my doing!

btw the only other change I see is that the "Lifetime Meters" now actually says "Lifetime" instead of guessing. I have to be honest and say since the "Meters" listed was right alongside the
Season 2012 date I thought the meters listed were for the season. Only by asking around here did I know that those were the Lifetime Meters and had to look elsewhere for the Season Meters. (and elsewhere still for "Challenge Meters)

I like what they did.

What a outstanding job damselfly is doing in keeping everything updated..... what a great team and such great motivation being put out... I could not be doing this without this support. Just a side note of why I row so much.
1. It is an outstanding workout
2. It keeps my mind and body in sync
3. It does not tax my body as much as other machines "but it is a very tough workout" one of the hardest I have ever done.
4. It Helped me in losing 70lbs and getting back to the body that I had when I got out of the military.....

I love how our rowing is being shown on a map. I login everyday to see how far our team has traveled. It is really fun.
I started rowing "erging" back in Nov of 2010 when I started my weight loss and getting back in shape.... I row at 24hr Fitness club.." hoping to get my own Rower next year" Again Thanks for all the support and again to all my teammates Keep up the great work...what a great Captain we have, Everyone keep up the great work.... :D

Thanks, David! I was hoping folks got something positive out of the map thing. It takes a bit of time but I don't mind if it makes the challenge more fun! (Plus I love doing geeky stuff.)

70 pound loss is awesome!! Congratulations!!! B) B) B)

I want to make a final appeal to those folks out there who belong to our year-round affiliation (TimBukTOO) and haven't yet joined in our challenge team for the VTC (TimBukTWO). Tomorrow is the last day to sign up. We need your help! We're stuck in Nevada, for heavens sake!

I know it can be confusing with the two kinds of "team"... To determine if you're on the challenge team or not, look for your name on this page. If you're not there, go to the team page and follow the instructions there to join TimBukTWO and register to participate in the Virtual Team Challenge. Thank you!!!

I echo David's sentiments, Lisa. You and the Cap'n are doing a great job leading the team. Thanks for all of your efforts.

About that record-breaking Danish team: what amazes me about these guys is that they row at an incredible pace without strapping their feet in. I could never do that without strapping in. Probably bad technique on my part.

I rowed multiple short intervals throughout the day today. Took it real easy. My wife thinks I am nuts every time I head down to the basement for another rowing session. I tell her "you don't understand! These people, they just don't ever stop rowing!" :o

I posted 2 sessions today: 20K yesterday and 25K today.

I didn't forget to post my metres yesterday so much as I was convinced I had already done it, which is proof enough that electrolyte depletion was at the root of the exhaustion I felt in rowing yesterday and the day before. So while the Blacksmith was shoulder-pressing anvils yesterday, I went shopping for a case of sports drinks and voila, I can report a vast improvement in the way I felt rowing today, drinking the Gatorade between splits. No doubt this isn't breaking news to most of you, but I offer it just in case there's anyone out there who, like me, doubted the value of these supplements.
