Ohh, goals for the challenge...
Lets see, weekends are rough for me... late start... Lets go 75,000 meters for this challenge. Might have to add on if I hit it to early
*edit* Actually, minimum anyone is running seems to be 100k. I'll call that my goal. Make it something I am not sure I can hit. Supposed to be a challenge right?

Wow, Mark said something inspiring? I thought he was saying he was on LSD!CONLEJM wrote:Today was a "light" day for me, though I went a little farther and longer than usual. I forget about the pace (which I am usually obsessed with), and just go at a comfortable speed. Normally I am exhausted after a rowing session, but after a light day, I still have some energy. Something Mark said a while back inspired me to start doing this a few days a week.glenmbaker wrote:I guess I just need a new definition of the term "rest": just row with your eyes closed!
Seriously, though, they did a study of "elite" vs. "national" level rowers, to see how they trained. The main difference? The elites did a higher percentage of their rows as "long & steady distance."
CAVEAT: They do get faster and faster at it, keeping their heart rate at 60-65% of their maximum. For those without heart monitors, they're keeping their exertion level at a 12 - 13 on a scale of 1 - 20. (They'll do their speed work at 18 -19, their "tempo" anaerobic work at about 15.)
In general, it's safest to do hard day/easy day, only doing 2 hards in a row in prep for a race to increase mental toughness. ("Easy" generally means slower, though a very long light row becomes a "hard" day in that you're forcing large adaptations on your body.) It'll keep you uninjured and adapting quickly to higher levels of fitness.

Wow-the colors man-the colors Always liked the LSD-no wonder I live 6 miles from Woodstock
As for my goal-I set that after my recent back ordeal. I've been REALLY pushing myself this month with no adverse effects, and haven't wanted to change my goal-don't want to mess with success. Silly, yes, but I'm fully functional-physically anyway-we'll leave my mental status alone-no sense you people seeing the "real me".
Then again-I can stop when I hit my goal, right???

That is good info; thanks for sharing. I am going to alternate hard day / easy day from now on, if only for the change of pace.Izzzmeister wrote: The elites did a higher percentage of their rows as "long & steady distance."
All this talk of half-marathons got me itching to try one today. My first ever, and I finished in 1:21:56.3. I have a ways to go before I catch up to Bruddah Izzz, but I am definitely seeing improvement.

You and me both--or at least, that's how I felt on Tuesday after reaching 6M lifetime metres (6,001 K). I felt totally justified in taking a day off yesterday, even after only 2 days rowing. The Blacksmith wrote: Then again-I can stop when I hit my goal, right???
Wanting the 10M sweatshirt for Christmas 2012 means it ain't over for me by a long shot. But if I go over my 400 K/month during this challenge, it not only helps the affiliation standing, it means I get to take a week or more vacation in another month (or sick leave ).
PS: I'm really glad to hear you're not killing yourself trying to beat me this time.
Heather

Busted, trampled, swamped, and left wallowing in the wake. You don't even have to reach slacker status, all you have to do is take your foot off the gas for one moment and woooosh....there goes everybody! The Blacksmith wrote:Boy, a guy just can't become a slacker around here without getting busted
It's OK though, the further you guys get out in front of me the less I can hear your maniacal laughter, taunts, and that strange humming sound that keeps coming out of one of those boats...

Hey Heather,
Congratulations on the 6 million!!! WOW!! And truth be told, I AM killing myself to stay ahead of you (a good thing-I need the motivation-and if I wasn't enjoying myself I wouldn't do it)-you are a really tough team member to work out with-once again a good thing. Glad you're in this challenge. I was really wondering about the appropriateness of your handle, then thought- Don't Hummingbirds migrate to South America or something like that?? Now the handle is not so surprising
Mark
