Jodi wrote:Happy new year Luna-Tics! I, for one, am sooo happy to see the door hitting 2011 in the butt! It had some highlights (30th anniversary, 50th birthday, and the birth of a grandson), but the rest was an uphill struggle that I hope to have seen the end of.
So, bright and early this morning,...actually it wasn't bright, it was quite foggy and dreary outside, but I sent my husband off on his 5 mile run and made my way over to my workshop/gym to get that New Years Day HM in. After taking a week off to recover from a cold I was surprised to get a PR, beating my last HM by over 3 minutes! Now that's the way to start the new year!
So how about you Bazzy, Andrea, Chris (Minnie) and BG? Were you able to row the New Years Day Half Marathon? How'd it go?
Hi Jodie, sure did...it was a bit different for me. Normally I row up to 20,000m (almost) every day, but usually do intervals of around 10,000/5,000m with a couple of minutes break between. So yesterday was a little different doing watching the metres countdown from the HM distance. I did pace myself and managed a 1:26.

Cheers, BBB
Well, it sounds like it went well all around. I was able to carve out a personal best at 1:47, and Rumping in Iowa did a personal best as well. I am probably going to be doing intervals myself starting this week as I want to get back into a weight lifting program with a bit of running intermixed. It gives a bit more definition to these old muscles and adds a bit of muscle confusion which will go well with my occasional mental confusion

Thanks for joining with me in the New Years Day HM. It really did make it more fun to know that I had some teammates along for the row. :D
OK, I am done with the half moon, eventually :). Technically it was January 2nd by the time I was done, but still my first day before going to sleep ;).
Started before lunch, then stopped as I had lots of stuff going on as we were preparing for friends coming over for a nice visit.
I got back on the erg rather late... And my PM is one hour ahead of PST :(.

Thanks Jodi for the challenge, for sure I would not have rowed as much, had I not promised...

Happy rowing!

Jodi threw an Opening Day challenge out there - and MANY teammates mooned !! Sometimes these accomplishments are a big FIRST, and sometimes they're the first in a really, really long time. Amazingly, some teammates threw down their half marathon, then went out and probably played tennis or watched movies, and came BACK TO THE ERG and put in some more meters. Whoa. Not me. Brutal after a New Year's eve.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 1.2.12

Post by Kona2 » January 3rd, 2012, 3:19 pm

Wowzer, mates! The meter counters are spinning faster and faster ! Good stuff - keep it coming!

Image Another episode...

While there are bits of blue sky starting to pop through, this day started out overcast and grey....in great contrast to yesterday which was a gorgeous day to be outside here in Colorado. Dogs loved their walk. Me too. The bunny trail of the mind started with thoughts of how much sunshine we each have in our day, and how variable that is with all our different locations. Right now, Cathie and Sam have a little less than six hours of sunshine a day (this will be greatly offset in the summer :D ...oh land of the midnight sun), and Baz, Angelo, Dave and Bernie in the southern hemisphere have about 14 hours (it's definitely their summertime!). The rest of the team is somewhere in between 8 and 10 hours on the average...except for Minnie who seems to have perpetual sunshine in California. Still, Cathie and Sam and all their fellow Alaskans have a very different world on many levels...and that dramatic change in amount of daylight plays a big part.

I lived in Delta Junction, AK and Ft Greeley, AK for about 3 and a half years. I was 8. My dad was stationed there, and it was just after Alaska had moved from territory to statehood. We drove there from Virginia, going over the then unpaved Alcan highway. (The Alcan highway itself - and its construction - is a whole 'nother story, for another bunny trail). The Alcan highway part alone took three days. My sister and I tried not to fight too much in the car. When we arrived in mid- summer, the only housing we could get was an apartment that was over a plumbing shop in Delta Junction. My dad would commute to the air base during that first year, and I took an Army bus to school. We rode to school in the dark, and we came home in the dark...probably a 30 minute trip or so each way, depending upon the snow. The time of "the dark" is still memorable to me...I think I read every book in the youth section of the base library. There wasn't much television, and we took advantage of daylight time by being outside as much as possible. Now I'm spoiled by living in a state with a lot of days of sunshine, and latitudes that give more hours of sun...but I still think about the sense of adventure and different perspectives you get from experiencing places like Alaska that are so physically (and often culturally) different. Good stuff.

Here's a cool chart of the highly variable amount of sunshine Bethel, AK gets during a year. The roman numerals on the bottom of the chart are the months, and the hours of the day are on the vertical margins. Probably obvious, but the yellow section is the sunlight:

Woo Hoo! Congratulations!
I hope that it is an indication of many other good things for you in the new year.

Congratulation Rosi and Zander on your 3 Mm and 2 Mm seasons so far - and with 4 months still to go.

Congratulations to all those who started the year with a HM! That's a long way to row.

What It Takes For A Top Ten Finish

A quick perusal of the last four years of data shows that the range of meters is going to be pretty wide: could be anywhere from 9 - 60 million team meters. Haven't quite figured out how to display the data we currently have, but suffice to say that both our Challenge teams are in the hunt. Row row row!

Kona I have a question. Am I on the wrong team? Should I be on Overcomming Disabilities? Or do I just stay with you guys? Richard T

Virtual Team Challenge: Thru Day 3 or 4

Post by Kona2 » January 4th, 2012, 12:13 pm

Image 26 or 27 days remaining

Congratulations on all the individual meter milestones occurring in this Challenge. These can't always be gauged by the usual callouts of 50K or 100K or 150K. It's exciting to see our teammates rowing at 150 percent of their "usual" daily meters...and completing this for more than a day or two. Thanks to all our participants for the time and energy devoted to the Challenge...you're helping your team! (And it's good for you, too!) :D

Wowzer....try keeping up with OD's average meters per person .... you'll be in the top FOUR percent of all rowers...or maybe the top five percent (the numbers change so fast)... :D
