Breaking News!

Post by Kona2 » December 26th, 2011, 1:50 pm

Wowzer, while I was updating the numbers...good things happened! It turns out we had more reindeer! Welcome back to Kenny H...and his reindeer! Yes, while we were hooking up all those reindeer to the sleigh, Kenny was over at NORAD making sure that we were visible on their radar. Make that 71 reindeer in the herd! And more Concept2 donation $$$!

Hooboy! This is like checking under the sofa cushions for loose change....with just $90.96 remaining in the quest to reach the full donation amount, we're at 99.7 percent of the overall goal as a rowing community (yep, had to revise the total before I even finished the posting). The Luna-Tics team contribution stands at 2.35 percent of the overall Concept2 donation amount. That's amazing!

Great work on the holiday challenge team Lun-tics, and a special thanks to K2 for the great Stats!! And congratulations to the milestones over the past couple of days...

Not long back from a 28 kilometre bush run so not sure I'll get a row in today, the couch beckons!!!

Cheers, BBB :)

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 12.27.11

Post by Kona2 » December 28th, 2011, 1:47 pm

Image Another episode.....bunny trails of the mind

The trail, like many before it, began while this astrogator was thinking about Upcoming Events...the ones that our teammates participate in that have little to do with actually rowing (I know...gasp!). And then I was down the trail - thinking about adventure, and what makes it so appealing. Our mission to the moon (and back) attracts those with a sense of adventure, those who are willing to jump into the unknown and challenge themselves. Most of us remember that sort of uncertain feeling when we were joining a virtual team - who knew what would come of that mouse click? Many on the team live true life adventures - participating in bold, sometimes (usually) risky undertakings..the kinds of things that have uncertain outcomes, involve discomfort...and probably no safety nets. We don't hear about all the adventures here, but every so often our teammates share some of what they're doing. For those stories, we gladly become what we could call armchair adventurers.

Baz's Coast to Coast Multisport adventure is coming up pretty quickly - and he referenced returning from a 28 km bush run just yesterday - so his training for the C2C is proceeding nicely. The C2C is a one or two day event where you can participate as an individual or as part of a two-person team. It's limited to 800 participants. The event takes place on the South Island of New Zealand, and involves traversing the Southern Alps. There's a bit of a run (3 km) to start the event, and then everyone hops on a bike (looks like road bikes vs mountain bikes?) and rides for 55 km....then some more running (33 km) through rocky terrain of the alps. More cycling, then a long stretch of kayaking (certificate required), and a flying cycling finish. No GPS, no mobile phones. You are allowed to have assistants (support crew is how I read this) who must wait in designated areas, all the while helping you with having your gear ready, or stowing it for you when you've finished a segment. Here's a link to the Speight's C2C...the handbook for the 2012 race is quite interesting.

http://www.coasttocoast.co.nz/

There are several photos of participants running in their bike helmets. Couldn't decide if that was just a transition area, or if it's a time saver. Very curious to know what kind of waymarkers exist for the mountain running segment, Baz.

Meanwhile, back at the erg....it's going to be a day of meter millionaires. So many are so close to a big milestone, that surely more than one will achieve millions today.

Season meters as of 242/365 = 113,629,000 m

Total meters on the day = 454,159 m and Jessica brought us some meters, too so grand total is 1,007,845 m

Oars in space (participation) = 33 percent

Image Sign on...sign on...sign on!

A quick note about the VIrtual Challenge Teams...some of our year-round teammates will be rowing as members of the Overcoming Disabilities Challenge Team. We know they sure can row, and will give everyone a row for the "money" so to speak. This is a good example of a division of affiliation and challenge teams, and I am glad they can celebrate being part of both. Works for me.

That said, we still have need to fill the roster of the Luna-Tics Challenge Team ! So take a minute, and go to the teams section of your logbook, and sign on to participate in yet another fun-filled Challenge. Last year we were EDGED out of a higher finish position at the last moment...the LAST moment. I mean really. This year could be different...it really could! But we'll need your help!
