2012 Calendar up, the Blue Moon is missing

Post by carlb » December 12th, 2011, 11:33 am

The 2012 Calendar PDF is available http://www.concept2.com/us/motivation/c ... lendar.asp

It does not show a Blue Moon Challenge in August. Wikipedia says there is a Blue moon Aug 2 and 31 in 2012 that fits the 2 moons in a month definition that was used for the 2009, 2007, 2004 challenges http://www.concept2.com/us/motivation/c ... uemoon.asp

When I checked the USNO here http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.php
they show a full moon in DC, Chicago, and LA on Aug 1st and 31st.

So it seems like there could be a Blue Moon challenge on August 31. Dog Days ends August 28.

Re: Dog Days in a prior post I had suggested that the weeks of 20k, 30k, 40k, 50k be allowed to be done in any order. That makes it more possible to fit into summer travel schedules.

You should write to rowing@concept2.com.

The full moons in August 2012 are
  • August 2, 03:27 UTC
  • August 31, 13:58 UTC (blue moon)
from http://aa.usno.navy.mil/cgi-bin/aa_moon ... 12&ZZZ=END

Then not again until Jul 2, 2015 @ 2:20 and Jul 31 @ 10:43.

RE: Blue Moon Challenges

I emailed Concept2 in 2009 about Blue Moon Challenges. As you might imagine, the Blue Moon Challenge for the Luna-Tics had kind of a team specific meaning. Meredith Haff, Concept2 Customer Service, answered my email and said that there was little interest in the Blue Moon Challenges, and because the 2010 Blue Moon occurred during the Holiday Challenge, they decided to cancel it. She indicated that this was not a permanent move and could be revisited if enough interest was expressed.

Since the Blue Moon is in August, seems like it might not be in major conflict with other challenges. The Luna-Tics team can support your request by writing in as well.

I emailed Rowing@c2 with my suggestion yesterday, have not heard yet. With the Dogs Days requiring 140k in August with 50k in the 7 days ending 8/28 there probably would be less interest in doing 10k more 3 days later....but I did suggest allowing the Dogs Days 20,30,40,50k be done in any order.

I've always really liked the 2009 BM artwork. The next Blue Moon will not be until July 2015. Three years between them seems enough 2009,2012,2015...then 2018 has 2. An occasional extra challenge in the calendar seems interesting.

Carl - Concept2 said no to my request. As such, the Luna-Tics will be hosting our Blue Moon Challenge...to all who want to participate on 31 August...dont have to belong to the team to participate.
