LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Another episode...
It really happened this way....number capture was proceeding well...until the total didn't match. Back to the affiliation detail to see where I'd gone wrong. That's when I saw it. Ronnie updated her location to provide more detail...and the location was Alligator Pond, JAM. Definitely an unusual place name. Off to Google Earth I went.
Was this real alligator or metaphorical alligator? We've had teammates who've traveled in search of alligators...so one can never be certain with this group of adventurers.
Happily, this Alligator Pond is near a town on the coast with the most AMAZING bay. Maybe Ronnie kayaks there. Still, with such an unusual name, more searching discovered: ALLIGATOR POND, in Saint Elizabeth: The name is said by locals to derive from the shape of the mountain range, which when seen from the beach, has bumps which look like an alligator's back. Like many other nations, some places are named for geographical features, some for people, some for humor and some ... well, they are truly reflective of the people, culture of the land.
"But many of the names are just purely Jamaican! Jamaicans enjoy naming things and they call it as they see it, so these place-names might describe an incident that happened there or a particular feeling or sentiment they wanted to convey (Rest-and-Be-Thankful, Me-No-Call-You-No-Come, Bad Times, Broke Neck Gully, Half Way Tree, Putogether Corner, Dump, Shambles, Rat Trap, Poor Mans Corner, Sally’s Delight, Betty’s Hope, Thankful Hill, Boldness, Good Design, Excellent Town, Happy Retreat, Heart Ease, Friendship and Welcome). Yes, those are all the names of real places in Jamaica!" http://keepitjiggy.com/other-good-info/ ... ace-names/
And so it was that errant numbers sent all of us down a pathway where once again we learn a little more about our teammates - and the places they call home. Cool stuff.

Rowing has been sporadic over the last couple of weeks. Work (both at home and in the office...) keeps getting in the way of life's important things, however I am building up brownie points to assist with erg time over the challenges coming up!

I will not be competing in that event this year, but am really looking forward to seeing the start of a gazillion bicyclists on Saturday. And there is a Bike Expo...like Jodi says...the Expo events that happen in conjunction with marathons and bike events are very fun.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
If any of you marathon runners, or extended session rowers, have the urge to make your own food bars ... these are really good, and so much cheaper than the commercial product.bg wrote:and speaking of marathon expos, i am once again running the boston marathon for the american liver foundation on their run for research team...
LARABARS
1-1/3 C (7 oz) hazelnuts (or half hazelnuts, half almonds)
1 C (10-1/2 oz) heaping/packed pitted dates (or half dates, half dried fruit of your choice)
1/4 t cardamom seeds (or ground cardamom, if seeds are unavailable)
1/4 t cinnamon
3 T cocoa powder (unsweetened)
1 T cocoa nibs (optional)
Using food processor, process nuts to fine chop.
Add spices and cocoa powder. Process to mix. Remove to bowl.
Process dates into a ball.
Add back the nut mixture.
Process until mixture comes together into a ball.
Pack and flatten between plastic wrap or parchment paper, to desired thickness.
Refrigerate overnight. Cut into bars. Wrap individually.
______________________________________________
The basic date-to-nut ratio is 3 parts dates to 2 parts nuts.
The seasonings are pretty much to taste.
