What OTW Training have you done today

No, ergs don't yet float, but some of us do, and here's where you get to discuss that other form of rowing.

I may write something pithy in it................
Hi Roy,

This is from our club's rules:
Because of limited boathouse space, members may not normally store equipment other than boats and oars. Members are allowed to store up to a maximum of three boats (plus oars) and must pay a storage fee based on the number of boats stored. The board has the authority to determine where any boat is stored in the boat house. The board reserves the right to change the number of boats a member can store at any time, and furthermore if the board determines that a boat is not actively being used then the board can require the owner to remove the boat within a time limit specified by the board.
It might seem surprising that members can store up to three boats, but we have a large boat house and plenty of room at the moment. With this rule we were able to move those boats seldom or never used to high racks that are not so easy to use and free up more convenient racks.

About one month ago we did a clean up of unused boats stored in our sheds. One bloke who hadn't paid his membership or storage fee for two years had his boat removed from the premises (without his permission) and placed out in the street. It since has dissapeared and we don't know if he's taken it somewhere else or somebody stole it.

But the saga of the political heavyweight that shouldn't be in our crew continues. He's just changed the rules(behind our backs by flexing his political muscle) for crew selection criteria. The rule was that anyone hoping to get a seat in the eight must do a 20 minute erg and achieve a minimum of 5700m. He has made the selection process non-tranparent by not allowing individual erg scores disclosed to all those competing for a seat. When challenged about this, as we all know he'd be lucky to sit on 1:55 pace let alone 1:44 for 20 minutes, he further changed the rules. Now he says the crew average must be 5700m for 20 minute ergs. With him seated in the crew he claims the current crew erg average is still 5700m. I find that hard to believe as most of us would have to be well over 5700m to drag his pathetic erg score(most likely under 5000m) back up to the 5700m average.

Stay tuned as I feel more sh*t is about to hit the ground.

Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

This guy is a complete dick! You must tell him to either accept reality and step down or Feck off from the club. Who need's money? :D
All erg test's should be witnessed by someone else, our coach watch's our effort's.

In our club someone would have twated him by now!

I thought about doing some hard pieces this morning, but I kept getting interrupted by the scenery.

Oh dear! What a tough life you have there :D :D

Fabulous scenery.

I did my first long session on Rowperfect this morning, 45 mins, felt like rowing on water. Lots of sweating too. I'm still waiting to get the updated little black box attached again. But I can't do that until work eases a bit. So it's just rowing hard with no feedback for the time being.

Last Saturday, 8km row. It was a race but I took it as a training.

Starting with 1min intervals, very thick mist and temperature 2 degrees below the freezing point.

Start:

The race on the Elbe river near Pardubice was 4km up stream, then turn around a buoy, 4km down stream. Participants started and disappeared into the mist. I saw nobody for the first 3.5km, then some participants returning. In the last 3km I took over a ladies double that had started 3 min before me. Steering was not ideal because I hadn't rowed there before, and the mist made it hard to anticipate the turns.

I rowed 25spm in the first half, 27spm in the second half. Finished third of the mens singles in 34min40.

Good work Sander!

I will participate in my first "race" on Saturday. I'm rowing in the mixed quad. It will be only my 5th time sculling ever....we'll see how it goes!

I got some good work in on the double last night with a lady in my boat. I sat stroke. We worked mostly on technique but did get up to about 28 spm for about 1K. Around 11K total rowing.

I will say this, now that I've sculled, I never want to sweep row again! Love it.

It was a borrowed boat. I own a 2009 Roseman single.

Come on Ray, get serious. You've been in a mixed quad and a double about half a dozen times and now you reckon your a sculler. Go out in a skinny racing single and make it set and run before you declare yourself a sculler. You might then change your mind again and retreat back to the sanctity of a crew boat.

If you had the skills to row sweep in a high performance eight crew then you wouldn't even bother contemplating sculling. Why would you. It's quite common seeing people that sweep poorly, miss sweep opportunities or are unable to fit in with a sweep crew that turn to sculling as their last option.

People might say that sculling requires more skill than sweep rowing but I tend to dissagree. For example it's far more difficult to get balance, crew timing and rythmn in a sweep four than a sculling quad. In sculling you just move straight up and down in the boat with two small oars. Mastering the dynamics of one large oar hanging off the side of the boat together with counter balancing someone on the opposite side requires more skill.

It is nice if you can do both sweep rowing and sculling. Some college crews do sculling in the fall after the season (almost entirely sweep rowing) is over. The idea is that in a single or double the sculler gets a better feel for balance and gets better feedback.

If I remember right, at the elite level larger forces are applied in sculling--something that was not obvious to me. I'm not an elite rower so I wouldn't know this from experience. I read that somewhere.

Not to start a flame war, but here is an amusing quip:

David Goldstrom during broadcast of World Cup at Poznan, 2008, said
Sculling is the superior sport. Rowing with one oar is for the clumsy ones.

There is an amusing video on youtube by an Olympic oarsman trying to get to grips with a single......and getting very wet, many times....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvRQkqI7 ... re=related

I'm not saying one way or another who is most skilled.......because I'm just a begginer who know's nothing.

Well I wouldn't call that "coming to grips with a single." In the statement below he said that he was deliberately flipping it to get used to it. It is definitely worthwhile practicing getting back on board. Anyone who has mastered rowing in a 2- at his level has more than enough skill for any kind of rowing.

However, I believe that any beginner is better off learning to scull first. I am convinced that going from sculls to sweeps is easier than the reverse. But a 2- is in a class by itself. For sheer rowing enjoyment, however, I have found that nothing matches the sweet feel of a well-coordinated eight when the boat sings. Unfortunately it is a rare occasion when one can find that in masters' rowing. It happens only when a team is well coached and has plenty of practice time together.

It's not that rare at Masters level to find such an eight over here. We have two such masters eights, currently at our club training for Australia's biggest head race, to be held 26 th November. They are a mens masters C, & a mens masters E, age group crew. Even though I'm under aged, I'm in the E crew which is well resourced and trains together on the water 3 to 4 times per week. We have two boats to choose from and three coaches plus some reserve rowers waiting to pounce on any seat that becomes vacant.

Yesterday we were allocated another boat to try out for the race. It's a Sykes eight and we made it sing in rough water. Can't wait to see how much more run we get out of this lovely hull on a calm day. I've volunteered to adjust the spans, heights and pitches to ensure we get the best out of this fast boat. Over time I've assembled quite a comprehensive rigging kit and don't mind doing a bit of rigging.

It's great being part of a large well organised crew that rows well together in this age group. A welcome change from rowing in my single.
