Stats and Quirks

Post by Kona2 » October 12th, 2011, 12:48 am

Since Ron's going to be doing the fill in for the stats, thought it would be good to share how it was that we started with stats...and how we found that stats was just one element of what people were really looking for in the forum.

Tom Peters (business management guru of his day) says that teams are full of quirky individuals...who usually rub each other the wrong way from time to time, and then come together to produce amazing outcomes. And it does take the whole team to produce an amazing outcome. Whether you row 100 or a number with a lot of zeroes behind it, you contribute to our success. Writing down the numbers every day gives a great opportunity to see some subtle changes, to note when someone is starting to push their meters....to provide that seed of a suggestion :D -that's the cool part of daily stats for the year-round team. Your commitment to the team on a year-round basis is acknowledged through those stats. The stuff that goes with the stats is the quirky part - it's graphics, and nuances - and sometimes bunny trails.

When our team first started providing stats, it was a copycat activity. During a challenge, one of the other teams had a podium - and only the top three rowers of the day could make it to the podium - kind of like the Tour de France. That didn't seem quite right, so we didn't keep that part of the copy. Since everyone was contributing, everyone's meters were listed in the daily roll call. This is a little tougher to do with the Challenge Team, thus a link to the individual contributions is given.

Would you have joined a team if you didn't have to join one for one of the challenges?! Some people only join a challenge team because you have to be a team member to participate. It can be kind of scary to put yourself out there to a team and ask "can I join?" I mean, what if some team said NO? So that was another thing we got rid of - you didn't have to ask permission to join....or leave. Virtual teammates become virtual friends....and it's not any less real or less complicated. The best mantra is "be the kind of teammate you would like others to be."

Barbara aka bg said something like "it takes a whole village to raise a Luna-Tic" when she reached her ten million lifetime meters. Different seasons and different challenges will highlight different people each time. Each one of those people inspires someone or many someones on the team in their own quirky way. The stats are always the starting point for those stories - and each of you are the main characters in this drama (sometimes we're an action flick).

Give us a good plot to work with - and we'll do our best to weave the tales.

Have a great time in Hawaii, Jan. Watch out for leaping antelopes while you're bicycling around that big island. Don't ride too close to the lava.

Ron - I know (really!) what Jan's spread sheet looks like, so my hat's off to you. Many thanks for doing the stats, and maintaining our little social network.

Someday when I have extra energy again, I might look into writing an application that simplifies some of the stat keeping. I work with data all day at work. Over the past several years, we've moved our analysis tools from automated spreadsheets to .NET applications. My expertise is more in manipulating data and database design for software consumption, but I can program well enough to make a simple GUI application. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to set something up that would automatically capture the stats at a certain time each day, store the data in a local database, and generate reports in a form that could pasted into the forum or exported into a spreadsheet. It seems like a fun project to work on. Maybe I'll start looking at it on Sunday while not rowing!

managed to get in some xtra meters yesterday.
They started streaming 'the biggest loser' on netflix and I haven't watched that show since season 3. Definitively helps the time go by

Fall Team Challenge: Thru Day 27 or 28 of 31

Post by Kona2 » October 12th, 2011, 10:06 am

ImageImage

Total Challenge Meters = 22,540,352 m (at this moment)

With 3 (southern hemisphere) or 4 (northern hemisphere) days remaining, we are surely on the flying finish track - have TEN percent of the challenge remaining!!! Still watching to see if Jay or Cathie busts a move towards that million meter mark - it could happen ! Total participation is now at 91 percent of the team - I think that's a new record for a Challenge for us! Great to see how many Lunie rowers have been pushing themselves closer to the next milestone! Some new names by the 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500K milestones! Great rowing by all !

Here's a link to the individual contributions being made - numbers are changing often!

I guess I fell off the rowing deep end just in time for the Fall Challenge. Sorry guys! It's been so nice here now that the weather's cooled off a bit... I've been taking advantage with some biking and soccer (my first love). Looks like y'all have kicked some butt this challenge though, way to row!

K2 enjoy your holiday, perhaps you'll get some cycling in. And speaking of the moon, was coming home from a cycle last night just as the moon was rising, and what a spectacular sight it was...

Go the lunies!

Tomorrow I go for my 8 week eval. This is when I am suppose to be turned loose or at least as loose as they turn you after sextuple by-pass surgery. Kind a hate to lose the weight lifting limit of 10 lbs., that came in pretty handy several times getting out of stuff I didn't want to do.

I'l report in after the eval.

Good luck to Danno,
Gratz to Barb, (and everyone else),
and...

GO RON!

Christine is worried that you and Brett are sandbagging and not posting all your meters so that you can beat her in the challenge. As the challenge nears its end, there's a lot of people out of energy who just want to see the challenge end so that their families can have them back :).

Only a few more days. That said, I'm done with the challenge I think. While I'm hoping to row on Saturday, I've met my (recently acquired) goal of 250k and am calling it good.
