My condolences for your loss, Enrage. Reality is an awfully harsh mistress sometimes
Yeah, that 30k is 2 days of rowing . I wanted to get into the top 10%, even if it's just for a little while. Hence me asking Brett how he does it and about his splits. I took it easy today for my splits (and watched Inspector Gadget), making today's 15k a lot easier than yesterdays.
But since I overdid my lunch (Chinese), I may end up putting in a few more meters this afternoon or tonight to make up for it. We'll see, but I'm not making any promises and it's more likely that I'll end up eating ice cream instead .

Well, not gloating - I've seen how these challenges often go with late (post - challenge) meter postings; however a few minutes ago we were within about 23,000 meteres of a million meter lead over Free Spirits... AND they now have 143 team members!
Way to row team! Our average meters are outstanding, and it is a credit to all.

Brett is blowing it away, a fantastic individual effort...and don't jinx me on the kayak, I'm a flat water racer, and whilst it is only a grade two river, it has plenty of scope to put me in the watermacbruce1 wrote:Thanks Baz, but I think the guy who is really coming on strong is Brett. Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
It's back to work for me tomorrow. Only on the weekends can I really stretch it out. As long as I can finish it out, today should be my best day. I'm still waiting to see a couple people come out of nowhere sometime before the deadline. I can't compete with the people at the top from last year. I think the leader averaged something like 80k a day. I might as well admit it, my goal is at least 1.2 million. We're over a third of the way into it, and I feel strong and am getting stronger.

Yeah, to be honest, if I was running a non-virtual team trying to win this thing, I'd have everyone row like crazy and not post any meters until the last day and have everyone else do the same in order to not motivate the competition. It's not really in the spirit of things though, but it's like eBay. Post big from the get go and the competition gets a lot more fierce.BigBrett58 wrote:It's back to work for me tomorrow. What a weekend you've had Brett . If today's better than yesterday it'll be a 120km+ weekend. Wow.
I managed to put in another 7k today, for 22k total (including the 15k Kona already posted). My wife's on a business trip for a couple of days which gives me a bit more time on the erg (as long as the kids cooperate). On the other hand, more time on the erg means a sore butt. Just as I hadn't had any problems with that aspect for the past 7 days, my butt's sore again. Since it took 30 minutes more than last week for the soreness to happen, I guess I'm slowly getting used to it.
My committed goal for the challenge is 120k. My attempted goal is 200k. I'm looking good for both, less than halfway in.
More stuff about me (I just love talking about myself I suppose): Elbow hasn't bothered me one bit today, and yesterday a bag of groceries had me feel it but otherwise it was fine. PT gave me a deep tissue massage, some stretches to work on and I have to lock my shoulders while rowing (push them all the way back and then down during the drive). Just the shoulder locking alone is a pain in the back as it's a position I'm not used to at all. But I guess it helps.
After yesterday's row, the back of my left heel was rather sensitive since I sometimes go too far forwards in the recovery and my heel lifts slightly. Yesterday I guess that happened too often, so today I had to focus to not make that mistake as I'd feel it every single time it happens. A good way to work on technique I guess. The sensitive area never turned into a blister, so that's a plus.
Now it's time for that bowl of icecream: Moose Tracks. Here's to the Loonies!

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Wim,
My daughter and I are huge fans of the Moosetracks.
Keep up the good work. I haven't been rowing long enough to offer much advice. The only thing I do when my body is wearing out is to reduce the drag on the fan. I usually set it at 4 and a half, but sometimes I take it down to 3 and a half. I can still maintain the same splits even though I have to row a little faster. I think once you get used to the speed of a lower drag, you'll boost your split a little bit when you move the drag back to your original setting.
If you want to log more meters, the easiest way I know of is to split your workouts in to short ones. For me, it's a little easier to do 2 6ks with a 5 minute break in between than doing a single 10k. This may sound crazy, but today I did workouts of 5,6,7,8,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2 for a total of 70k. I guess I'm nothing if not creative.

Moose tracks is good ice cream . For me it's just hard not to try and row my best splits. I'm getting better at it though. In the meantime, I should invest in some gloves/grips as my fingers are getting sore and calloused. On the other hand, I won't have the time to row over 90 minutes in a day all that often so I guess I can just deal with it for now.BigBrett58 wrote:Wim,

I like the way you split up your 70k. Mine was a 10k, followed by a 5k a few minutes later, timed about perfectly to complete the movie I was watching. Then in the evening I did a 30min piece for 7k and watched Hawaii 5-0 from this past Monday.
While rowing I find myself counting the percent completed of the piece. Just Row is annoying to me since there's no hard target. If I do a 2k, I count every 20m. On a timed piece it's a bit harder to calculate % completed, but I still keep track as to how far I'm coming along. Then there's the whole "how many m have I rowed in the last 5 minutes" statistic I keep track of in my mind while I'm rowing. The mind is an odd thing. Present it a set of constantly changing numbers and it'll constantly try to make sense of it all. That's one of the reasons I bought the C2 over different rowers: The PM3 had a lot more numbers than the rower I found in a local store. At the time I wasn't looking at all at online, the logbook or the community. I'm _VERY_ glad I ended up with the C2, as I love the community as well as the logbook, challenges, Facebook app and just everything surrounding it. If I try and explain it to friends they just say "cool" and look at me as if I've gone insane.
We probably are a little nuts for doing this, but hey... It's no fun being sane.

Just a thought on the tendonitis in the elbow; one potential cause is having tension in your forearm and then putting your whole arm under a load, like you would when rowing.
Check the way you are holding the handle, are you letting it rest in your hand, or are you ‘gripping’ it with some force? If you clench your fist you will see what I mean, it tightens your forearm. Once your arm is under load from pulling back on the stroke if your forearm is tight from gripping you are odds on to get some form of tendonitis in the elbow at some stage. Relax your grip if this is the case...
And be careful with it as it is one of those injuries that usually needs some form of rest from the ‘cause’ and/or some form of medical intervention. Loathe to suggest cortisone, but there is a product called traumeel which can be injected into the joint and it is a homeopathic anti-inflammatory. My sports doctor has used this over the years as a first pass to assist these types of injuries before wheeling out cortisone.
Ps: I’m no doctor, but I’ve suffered from this as a result of gripping weight-lifting bars too tight...and being lazy in my kayak stroke!
Cheers, BBB (Dr )

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
This part made me laugh, because this is exactly what I do. I'm always computing percents and fractions in my head as I row. I also like to compute the, If I increase/decrease my pace by this much, my split at this point in time will be that. And, based on the time remaining, if I maintain this pace I should finish at this time. The more numbers I try to calculate, the less I think about all the little pains.Rumping wrote: While rowing I find myself counting the percent completed of the piece.
