LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.

A member of an indoor rowing team or club? If so, this is the place for you.

Can this one team row to the moon and back?

Second spot is going to be ours if I have anything to do about it. I just went to Scheels to see if they handled warranty on the HR belt, or if they had a new battery for it. Instead, they told me to grab a new HR belt off the shelf and exchanged it (I didn't have a receipt either).

I overpaid for the thing originally because I wanted it "now" instead of waiting a day or two for the mail, but I think the extra cost just paid for itself :).

And a quick comment on ‘sore butt’ ...

Frequently comes up in discussion, especially when putting in extra time on the ERG. As a long distance kayaker (Hawkesbury Classic race 111 kilometres – 11 hours) I can only say time in the seat goes a long way to assisting. I don’t use any cushioning in the kayak or on the ERG, and over time my ‘butt’ has given up complaining. One of the reasons I don’t in the kayak, especially the K1 is because it changes the dynamics and potentially the stability.

But let me qualify, very possibly the soreness is symptomatic of other muscular issues, such as tightness in the glutes and hamstrings. I do a lot of squatting as part of weight training, and without fail spend at least 15 minutes stretching after any training session, whether weights, ERG, kayak, or bike, working on the hamstrings and glutes as well as upper body. Try rolling your ‘butt’ on a tennis ball for the really sore bits.

For those who suffer from it I suggest spending time (or more time) on stretching and I’m sure you will notice an improvement over a relatively short-time period. Continue to use the cushioning, but try and eliminate it over time by focussing on the core problem...

Actually, they say smearing a bit of vegemite... no won’t go there!

I'm not entirely sure what the cause of the tender behind is. It feels like it's a muscle in my behind simply creased/folded up while rowing, and it became tender after a while. In my case I think it's most likely because I tend to sit close to the edge of the seat instead of in the middle of it. Once the tenderness disappears, so will the towel as it shifts me off balance by a few inches and I'm not truly in the center of the erg anymore.

While I've seen/heard that it is best to sit on the front half of the seat, I now disagree with that advice personally :).

Now as far as the vegimite goes... How about no?

Luna-Tic Fall Challenge Team: Thru Day 3

Back when it was oh-dark-thirty and these numbers were taken prisoner, we were in the number 2 spot on the challenge team list. Since that time, we've gained a new team member and rowed almost half a million cool meters! Some of the names on our team list have been there for many seasons prior to this - and it is always great to see returning faces/names. Wowzer, mates - this is some really good work. Brett has taken advantage of the historical reenactment weekend for Ron, and has taken the Rudolph spot on the herd of ergs flying through space. Enrage has mooned us - a half marathon! Well done!

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 9.17.11

Post by Kona2 » September 18th, 2011, 8:44 pm

Sadly, I had to stake my 'tombstone' somewhere around the 17th green...and my theme tune changed from "Stayin' Alive" to "Another One Bites The Dust." It was a gorgeous blue sky day here, and wonderful to be outside.

We are raking in the milestones! We've had full marathons, half marathons, personal bests! Welcome back to Orion, Princess Anais, and Akira. Kudos to all the parents and grandparents who are modeling the way and getting their kids involved in some kind of exercise, doesn't matter if it's not rowing.

I am curious about Kaptain Kristine...haven't heard from her since before her marathon with the Two Bears. Hopefully she will check in with us soon.

Season meters as of 141/365 = 50,863,261 m

Total meters on the day = 374,514 m

Oars in space (participation) = 26 percent

Back in 2nd for the moment, but only by 9k... I wonder if it will stay neck and neck for a long time, or if one team will surge ahead. We should have Ron back tomorrow, which will give us a shot in the arm. Unfortunately, I think I need an IV. :)

You've been rowing quite a bit more - keep up with the hydration and rest days. I know that I find that it's usually the second day after a big row that feels like a butt kicker.

All the rowing that everyone does - whether it's 500 m or 15,000 m or more - helps keep us in the top five. We've got good participation - that's the fun part.

They've got 7 more members, but we have a higher per member average going. Just in case, I just put in another 3k (at a slow pace, HR between 107-115). Nothing special, but it gave me an excuse to eat another chocolate :).

And since it took me a bit of searching to find the link, here's the Fall Challenge current rankings:

http://www.concept2.com/sranking03/team ... group=team

As of this post, we're ahead of Free Spirits by 28.9km. WOOT!

Edit: And as of this edit, we gained another 16km.

Luna-Tics Fall Challenge Team: Thru Day 4

Post by Kona2 » September 19th, 2011, 10:14 am

Image Image

There are 240 teams registered for the Fall Team Challenge - and today finds us in the number 2 spot in that long list. So far, out of the 3,929 individual rowers signed on with the various teams, 2054 are "active". That's greater than fifty percent of the team population - and great for this point in the challenge! Team participation and composition will continue to be pretty fluid until the last day of September when the team rosters are frozen. That's when we'll start to see further place-holder definition in the top ten teams.

What's different with this year's Luna-Tic Fall Challenge Team? We had 68 people on our Fall Challenge Team last year - and this year we're at 119 as of this posting. We have seven people who could be on a million meter pace for the Challenge...that's a lot of erg time! For me, a successful challenge is when we get over 85 percent participation from those who signed up for the Challenge. Right now we're at 75 percent participation - and that's great for only four days into the FTC. Row what you can, when you can. Every meter counts.

We've got a lot of team forum chatter about the FTC as well - and that's another metric for a successful challenge. Almost spilled my coffee when I read "ur crazy Brett." Told you this rowing stuff was addictive! We'll also know how successful we were in the FTC when the other two team challenges come around on the rowing calendar - if people have a fun time and meet their personal goals, feel like they were able to contribute to the team's success...they return.
